In Spanish, 'palabras compuestas' (compound words) are those that are formed from the union of two or more simple words, lexemes or roots. For example: girasol, atrapasueños, hispano-argentino.
A compound word is taken as a unit in itself and independent of the two that compose it, for which reason it must follow the general rules of accentuation and spelling of the language. For example: ciempiés, espantapájaros, autovía.
