Welcome to the British Phycological Society's Facebook site! The Society was founded in 1952, and is one of the oldest in the world.
The British Phycological Society publishes the European Journal of Phycology. The Society holds an annual two-day meeting, generally in July, which is usually attended by 100-120 persons, about half of whom are students and post-docs. It provides funding for students and others to attend meetings and fieldcourses and organises and funds annual field courses.

2025 winner of the Hilda Canter-Lund photography competition macro category- Milan Beck: “Freezing Fucus” ❄️
This award was established by the British Phycological Society in recognition of Hilda Canter-Lund, whose stunning photographs will be known to many members. Her photomicrographs of freshwater algae combined high technical and aesthetic qualities whilst still capturing the quintessence of the organisms she was studying.
