It was a pleasure to have Benny Sudakov, (ETH Zurich) Visiting Professor in our Department, speak at yesterdayโs CGO seminar.
His talk explored an analogue of the classical Helly theorem for Hamming balls of bounded radius, establishing a Helly number that is independent of the ambient dimension, with connections to extremal set theory, coding theory and graph theory.
The work is joint with Noga Alon and Zhihan Jin.
A huge thank you, Professor Sudakov, for a brilliant talk! ๐ซ

Yesterday our department welcomed ๐๐ง๐ค๐๐๐จ๐จ๐ค๐ง ๐รฉ๐ง๐๐ง๐ ๐พ๐ค๐ง๐ฃ๐ชรฉ๐๐ค๐ก๐จ, (Carnegie Mellon University) who presented his latest work on computing nonnegative dyadic solutions to systems of linear equations.
The talk introduced algorithmic refinements that significantly improve solution sparsity, with computational experiments spanning random 0-1 systems, MIPLIB instances and perfect matching covering problems.
This research is joint work with Anthony Karahalios and Vrishabh Patil.
Many thanks to Professor Cornuรฉjols for a fascinating seminar! ๐

Congratulations are in order!
It is a pleasure to spotlight Vanessa Madu, Guest Teacher in Mathematics at the LSE Department of Mathematics, who is among the winners of the STEM Educator of the Year Award!
Awarded by SheCanCode, Vanessa has been recognised for fostering inclusive classrooms where students feel empowered to explore complex ideas without fear. Beyond the university, she is a dedicated science communicator, bringing the "magic" of mathematics to life through outreach programmesโfrom lecturing at the Royal Institution to inspiring underrepresented students at summer schools.
Thank you, Vanessa, for your passion and commitment to showing the world that mathematics is truly transformative! ๐

We are delighted to share that Mathematics student ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ง๐จ๐ ๐ฟ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ ๐ฝ๐ค๐จ๐ฌ๐๐ฃ will be presenting at this yearโs Knowledge Beyond Boundaries, LSEโs interdisciplinary student research conference, taking place on Wednesday 17 June.
Aakarsh will present: โWhoโs liable when no oneโs driving? A three-pillar framework for AV accountability in Japan.โ
The conference brings together our current students, recent alumni and students from CIVICA partner universities to showcase innovative research and explore this yearโs theme, How to Save the Planet.
Weโre incredibly proud to see our students sharing their research and contributing to important conversations.
Congratulations Aakarsh, and best of luck with your presentation. ๐
