The Functional Imaging Laboratory (FIL) was founded in 1994 following a major grant award from the Wellcome Trust. This provided for a new building, capital equipment and core staff support. The award enabled a core group of scientists led by Richard Frackowiak, then based in the Medical Research Council Cyclotron Unit at the Hammersmith Hospital, to relocate to a central London site, within UCL.

Over the Summer, the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging welcomed two talented A Level students for a two-week placement.

Each student was matched with a PhD student mentor, who supported them to produce a report including a literature review and data analysis.

Find out how Hamida, one of the students who took part, got along in the ARM lab with her mentor, Jenny Lee.

At the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging, lots of our research relies on volunteers visiting the Centre for scans.

In Understanding MRI, we worked alongside study participants to address their biggest questions and alleviate anxieties surrounding going for an MRI brain scan.

This project was a collaboration between researchers, research volunteers, technicians, an illustrator, and the Centre’s Public Engagement team, to co-produce an animation which answered volunteers’ most popular question: what is functional MRI?

The Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging at UCL is currently recruiting for a number of non-invasive brain imaging studies.🧠

We are looking for a mixture of healthy adults and people with specific conditions to take part. There are many different studies all with a different focus, and several are paid or offer reimbursement.

If you’d like to help us better understand the functions of the human brain and improve the lives of people with psychological and neurological conditions, you can find more information at https://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/about/visitor-and-participant-information/
