Mastering Essay Writing for the Trinity B1 SELT ISE Exam for Skilled Workers Visas
Many students and immigrants preparing for their B1 ISE English test—often required for switching to a Skilled Workers visa or applying for a new visa—struggle with the Extended Writing Task, especially when it comes to writing essays. Poor structure, unclear ideas, and confusion about essay types are common reasons for low scores.
To help you succeed, here are simple tips on writing the three main types of essays you might be asked to write in the Trinity SELT ISE exam:
1. Descriptive Essay
What it is: This type focuses on describing a person, place, event, or experience using clear and vivid language.
Tips: Use adjectives, describe using the five senses, and keep your writing organized with an introduction, main body, and conclusion.
2. Discursive Essay
What it is: This type presents different sides of an issue in a balanced way, often without taking a strong position.
Tips: Introduce the topic clearly, discuss both sides with examples, and avoid personal bias unless asked for an opinion.
3. Argumentative Essay
What it is: This essay type asks you to express and support your opinion on a topic.
Tips: Clearly state your opinion in the introduction, support your points with examples and facts, and end with a strong conclusion.
Final Advice:
Always plan your essay before you write.
Keep your language simple, clear, and correct.
Make sure each paragraph has a clear purpose and use linking words like “however,” “for example,” or “in conclusion.”
Mastering these essay styles will improve your writing and give you confidence in your test. Good luck!

Trinity College London offers two SELT options: GESE (spoken only) and ISE (Integrated Skills in English), which includes reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
