In 1893 the Vestry of St Leonard's, Shoreditch, inaugurated Trade Classes for the local youth. Teacher training started at the STI in 1919.

The London College of Furniture a fabled establishment started off in Pitfield Street, East London as the Shoreditch Technical College -It is now part of London Metro University Although these were not aimed solely at the furniture trade, furniture and related trades were the foremost trades of the area and so the principal focus of the classes.
