A reference to fifty-four countries that constitute the African continent, the title of 1-54 establishes the parameters of the fair’s ethos: as a platform that strives to represent multiplicity and showcase the diversity of contemporary African art and cultural production on an international stage.

Ahmed Cherkaoui (1934–1967) was a pioneering Moroccan modernist whose practice has informed generations of Moroccan contemporary artists through a distinctive visual language rooted in symbolism, Amazigh heritage, and cultural memory.

One of his 1964 paintings, Signes au ciel, has set a new benchmark at auction, selling for €868,265—more than double its estimate of €250,000–€400,000—and marking the highest recorded sale for Cherkaoui and for any Moroccan painter.

From thoughtful encounters to vibrant conversations and standout artistic moments, this edition brought together artists, galleries, collectors, and audiences from across the globe. Thank you to everyone who helped shape this chapter in New York.

Across the fair, 1-54 Presents: Brazil Beyond Brazil, Special Projects, and installations throughout the Starrett-Lehigh Building, this year’s edition reflected the continued energy and global reach of contemporary African and diasporic art.
