Windrush Day is celebrated every year on 22 June to remember the contributions made by Caribbean migrants and their families to the UK, and this year's theme "Honouring the Past, Shaping the Future" centres on intergenerational connection and a continuation of celebrating Caribbean heritage and history for future generations 💭
🔍 Sabrina Bowen, one of our award-winning PhD researchers at Birkbeck, has focused her research on exploring the intergenerational transnational activities and identities of the UK Anglophone Caribbean diaspora. In observation of Windrush Day, she said: "For me, Windrush Day is a time to honour my grandparents' generation who sacrificed so much. They left their home, friends and family members behind to help rebuild the UK and create a more financially stable life for themselves and their families despite the hardships and racism they faced.
My research explores the transnational practices and identities formations of the Caribbean diaspora through an intergenerational lens. It explores the diverse ways in which diasporic individuals and communities maintain connections with the Caribbean, how these relationships change over time and between generations, and the resulting social, cultural and economic impacts on both the Caribbean and its diaspora."
