For this week's second post we asked our inaugural /India Research Programme, German Historical Institute London - MWS - Max Weber Forum for South Asian Studies - MWF Delhi Tandem Fellows Dr Samira Junaid (Bengaluru) and Dr Jolita Zabarskaitė (Berlin) about their motivations for applying to the fellowship:

We applied for the GHIL/IRP-MWF Tandem Fellowship because it provides a valuable opportunity for us to combine our expertise in South Asian and Southeast Asian studies to investigate the “Greater India” thesis. This fellowship allows us to access crucial archives in both London and India. In London, we can explore British colonial records and scholarly works that influenced early historiography, while in India, we will examine regional sources that offer diverse perspectives on the “Greater India” concept.

This dual access is essential for analysing how South Indian and Malay scholars reinterpreted India’s historical role in the region, focusing on Tamil vernacular perspectives and interactions between South Indian and Bengali intellectuals. The fellowship will support us in writing a comprehensive history of modern Indian historiography from a transregional and transnational perspective. With the help of the resources and scholarly community at GHIL and IRP-MWF, we aim to contribute significantly to understanding complex historical narratives and their contemporary implications.
