🎉🇫🇷🇪🇸 Success at the St Mary’s University MFL Poetry Live Final! 🇪🇸🇫🇷🎉

On Wednesday 17 June, Ayaka and Tatiana proudly represented our school at the St Mary’s University MFL Poetry Live Final. 👏

55 Year 8 pupils from 17 schools took part in this exciting competition, reciting a poem from memory in French, German or Spanish before an audience, followed by an unseen poetry challenge in front of a panel of judges.

📖 Ayaka performed L’Éternité by Arthur Rimbaud.

📖 Tatiana performed Se equivocó la paloma by Rafael Alberti.

Both pupils performed exceptionally well, showcasing impressive language skills, confidence and composure. ⭐

🥈 A huge congratulations to Tatiana, who was awarded 2nd place - an outstanding achievement!

We are especially proud that the organisers praised our pupils for their excellent language ability and exemplary manners.

A special thank you to our SAP Modern Languages teachers for their encouragement, preparation and support throughout the journey. 💙

Well done, Ayaka and Tatiana you represented our school brilliantly! 👏✨

✨A very warm welcome to Thomas Franks! ✨

We are delighted to share that Thomas Franks will be joining the St Augustine’s Priory family as our new catering partner from September 2026. 🎉

Chosen following a comprehensive review process, Thomas Franks impressed us with their passion for freshly prepared food, high-quality ingredients, sustainability and creating an exceptional dining experience for our pupils. 🌱🥗💚

Over the coming months, we’ll be working closely together to create exciting new menus and further enhance mealtimes for our whole school community. 🍎🍴

📅 We’re also looking forward to meeting members of the Thomas Franks team at Summer Fair (Association Day) this Saturday 27th June, where they’ll be serving a delicious Hog Roast and chatting to pupils, parents and staff about their exciting plans for the future.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Holroyd Howe for their support and dedication to St Augustine’s Priory over the years. 💙

🥾🏕️ Year 10: Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Qualifying Expedition 🏕️🥾

Congratulations to our fantastic Year 10 students on successfully completing their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Qualifying Expedition in the South Downs over the weekend of 12th June! 👏✨

Arriving at Hassocks Station with heavy rucksacks and a mixture of excitement and anticipation, students embarked on three days of hiking across the beautiful South Downs. Along the way, they conquered steep hills, enjoyed breathtaking countryside views, passed fields of sheep and friendly horses, and were very pleased to avoid any encounters with cows! 🐑🐎🌿

After each day’s hike, students pitched their tents, cooked meals on Trangia stoves, and spent time relaxing around the campfire, toasting marshmallows, singing songs and playing cards together. 🔥⛺️🍡🎶

Throughout the expedition, every student demonstrated incredible determination, resilience and teamwork, supporting one another every step of the way to successfully reach Plumpton Station and complete their qualifier. 💙👏

We are immensely proud of all they have achieved and the positive attitude they showed throughout the weekend.

On Tuesday, Years 3–5 entertained families with their ‘Home and Away’ theme, featuring poetry, songs and a fantastic performance of Africa by Toto. 🌍🎵

On Thursday, our Pre-Prep pupils (Reception, Years 1 & 2) delighted everyone with a ‘Bears’ theme, complete with adorable bear hats, a lively recital of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and a singalong to The Bare Necessities. 🐻🌿

Each celebration concluded with pupils receiving their well-deserved certificates of achievement, followed by a lovely afternoon tea enjoyed by parents. 🫖✨

A huge thank you to all our Form Teachers, Classroom Assistants and Mrs Warren for creating such joyful and memorable summer celebrations. 💙

✨ An inspiring afternoon of poetry with the incredible Isabelle Baafi ✨

On Tuesday 16 June, the English Department welcomed award-winning poet Isabelle Baafi, whose acclaimed collection Chaotic Good was nominated for the TS Eliot Prize and is currently shortlisted for the Seamus Heaney First Collection Poetry Prize 🤞📚

Students from Year 9 and above took part in a creative workshop exploring the theme ‘Beauty in unexpected places’, writing their own poems in response to Isabelle’s thought-provoking prompts.

The highlight? Hearing Isabelle read from Chaotic Good and answer students’ insightful questions. Her honesty, warmth and dazzling use of language captivated everyone in the room and showcased the power of poetry to inspire, connect and transform.

As one Sixth Former put it: “Her visit allowed students a rare opportunity to engage directly with a writer at the forefront of modern poetry.”

And there’s more exciting news… Isabelle will be returning in the Autumn to lead a series of five workshops for selected students! 🎉

Another fantastic example of the English Department’s commitment to bringing poetry to life – and we can’t wait to see where this inspiration leads our young writers next.
