🥾🏕️ Year 10: Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Qualifying Expedition 🏕️🥾
Congratulations to our fantastic Year 10 students on successfully completing their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Qualifying Expedition in the South Downs over the weekend of 12th June! 👏✨
Arriving at Hassocks Station with heavy rucksacks and a mixture of excitement and anticipation, students embarked on three days of hiking across the beautiful South Downs. Along the way, they conquered steep hills, enjoyed breathtaking countryside views, passed fields of sheep and friendly horses, and were very pleased to avoid any encounters with cows! 🐑🐎🌿
After each day’s hike, students pitched their tents, cooked meals on Trangia stoves, and spent time relaxing around the campfire, toasting marshmallows, singing songs and playing cards together. 🔥⛺️🍡🎶
Throughout the expedition, every student demonstrated incredible determination, resilience and teamwork, supporting one another every step of the way to successfully reach Plumpton Station and complete their qualifier. 💙👏
We are immensely proud of all they have achieved and the positive attitude they showed throughout the weekend.

✨ An inspiring afternoon of poetry with the incredible Isabelle Baafi ✨
On Tuesday 16 June, the English Department welcomed award-winning poet Isabelle Baafi, whose acclaimed collection Chaotic Good was nominated for the TS Eliot Prize and is currently shortlisted for the Seamus Heaney First Collection Poetry Prize 🤞📚
Students from Year 9 and above took part in a creative workshop exploring the theme ‘Beauty in unexpected places’, writing their own poems in response to Isabelle’s thought-provoking prompts.
The highlight? Hearing Isabelle read from Chaotic Good and answer students’ insightful questions. Her honesty, warmth and dazzling use of language captivated everyone in the room and showcased the power of poetry to inspire, connect and transform.
As one Sixth Former put it: “Her visit allowed students a rare opportunity to engage directly with a writer at the forefront of modern poetry.”
And there’s more exciting news… Isabelle will be returning in the Autumn to lead a series of five workshops for selected students! 🎉
Another fantastic example of the English Department’s commitment to bringing poetry to life – and we can’t wait to see where this inspiration leads our young writers next.
