Thank you to Alan Clewlow of Volcanic Experiences and Mila Bartkova, GA Overseas Field Meetings Secretary, for leading a fabulous trip to Sicily and the Aeolian Islands.

We had a full week of all things volcanic: Vulcano, Stromboli and Etna were all spectacular and it was fascinating to learn how the islands sit within the regional geological context.

Day one of our field excursion to Sicily and the Aeolian Islands got off to a great start: a short boat trip to Vulcano from our base at Lipari to scale the volcano that named them all. Fantastic views from the top of the local volcanic features and surrounding islands.

Welcome to June with a mesmerising image taken from the Geologists' Association 2026 calendar of the Isle of Staffa, Inner Hebrides, Scotland taken by Peter Lincoln.

The island of Staffa, with its famous Fingal's Cave, is entirely of volcanic origin. It consists of black, fine-grained basalt lava from volcanoes active in the Eocene epoch. The slow cooling of one of the lava flows has resulted in the formation of remarkable polygonal columns.
