Archaeology is not just digging.
In this extract from our Arthur’s Stone student archaeology film, one of the students reflects on what it means to work in a quarry trench and think through the choices people made in the past.
Where would they dig? How would they move the stone? How would they use it?
It is a lovely moment because it captures the deeper value of fieldwork: learning to slow down, observe carefully, and think your way into another time.

Hopes archaeological dig will solve Warrington Castle mystery A project to find Warrington's long-lost medieval castle near to the River Mersey is launched.
What does archaeology actually feel like when you are part of a live excavation?
This short extract from our Arthur’s Stone student archaeology film captures University of Manchester students learning on site, contributing to real research, and discovering the Dorstone landscape through fieldwork.
A few years later, this still feels like one of the most special parts of the project: the people, the landscape, and the experience of doing archaeology for real.

A huge thank you to Mark and Future Artists for becoming a Founding Supporter of the Warrington Castle project.
Their generous £250 support helps us move the project forward as we work towards the next stage of responsible archaeology, public updates, school engagement and community storytelling around Warrington’s lost castle.
This kind of support makes a real difference. It helps show that local people, creative businesses, and community minded organisations believe this story is worth exploring properly.
Thank you to Mark and Future Artists for backing the project and helping us keep the momentum going.
If any other businesses, organisations or supporters would like to get involved, our sponsorship pack is here:

Warrington's Lost Castle: The Mystery Beneath Our Feet - BBC Sounds Could Warrington's lost castle still be hidden beneath the town?
London is full of statues, but they are not just decoration.
Around Westminster, Whitehall and the Strand, the streets are crowded with memory: kings, generals, scientists, reformers, soldiers, civic symbols and monuments from older empires.
Some are impossible to miss. Others are easy to walk past without noticing.
For me, this is what makes exploring London so fascinating. The city becomes an outdoor archive, built from bronze, stone, names, symbols and silence.
