Four weeks. Countless conversations. A different perspective.
Students at Rochdale Sixth Form College have spent the last month learning through lived experience, exploring Braille, sign language, accessibility, blindfold activities and wheelchair challenges.
One student's feedback stood out:
"Everyone thinks they understand it, but when you finally experience it, it's a lot different."
Awareness starts with learning.
Understanding comes through experience.

Disability Awareness and Team Cohesion Program
I always joke that when I'm paying for something, I'm tapping the biscuits, the snacks, the counter and pretty much everything except the card reader.
But the reality is, as a visually impaired person, this is one of the challenges I face every single day.
Not because I don't have my card or phone ready.
Simply because I can't find the card machine.
It might sound like a small thing, but when you're standing at a counter searching for it while people watch, unsure whether to help or what to say, it can quickly become frustrating.
The good news?
Making that experience easier often takes just a few words.
"Would you like me to bring the card machine to you?"
"Would you like me to guide your hand to it?"
"Would you like me to place your phone on the reader for you?"
Simple questions.
No assumptions.
Just offering support.
Sometimes accessibility isn't about major changes, expensive equipment or complicated solutions.
It's about understanding the challenges that others face and having the confidence to ask how you can help.
The smallest interactions can often make the biggest difference.
What everyday task do you take for granted that might be a challenge for someone else?

Words. That. Matter.
πππ§‘
My steering wheel costs Β£20,000.
Most people are surprised when they hear that.
The specialist technology that allows me to drive independently costs far more than most people would imagine.
It's a reminder that accessibility often comes at a cost many people never see.
I'm incredibly grateful for schemes like Motability and the organisations helping make independence possible for people with disabilities.
Because driving isn't just about getting from A to B.
It's about freedom. Opportunity. Independence.
Accessibility helps remove barriers so more people can live life on their own terms.Β
Most people don't want to get it wrong.
They just don't get the opportunity to learn.
One of the most powerful reflections from our recent session was how valuable it was to have a safe space to ask questions, learn and build confidence.
Not because people learnt all the answers.
But because they left remembering the little things.
Offering help.
Opening a door.
Showing someone where they need to go.
Taking the time to ask.
Because inclusion is often built through small actions that make a big difference.

When people understand people better, they are better equipped to support others. πππ§‘
A brilliant session with the Early Help & Schools team at Rochdale Council, bringing together governors, HR specialists and colleagues from across the service.
Through Education, Sport and Speaking, we explored awareness, inclusion and the impact that small actions can have on staff, children and young people.
Great conversations, great engagement and plenty of laughter along the way.
Thank you for having us.

When parents hear their child has a disability, their minds often jump straight to the future.
Will they be happy?
Will they be independent?
Will they have opportunities?
Imagine being told your child may never see clearly.
Imagine being told your child may never hear.
Imagine being told your child may never walk.
For many families, those moments can feel overwhelming.
But a diagnosis doesn't predict a person's future.
The three people in this photo all grew up with different challenges.
ποΈ One can't see.
𦻠One can't hear.
βΏ One can't walk.
Look at them now.
The disability never disappeared.
But neither did their potential.
Never underestimate what someone can achieve.
Anything is possible.

Small changes can make a big difference.
We had a fantastic time delivering a disability awareness workshop with the team at Carrs Pasties in Bolton.
During the session, staff explored practical ways to better support customers and colleagues, including understanding how to support someone who lip-reads, confidently sighted guide a person with a visual impairment, and appropriately assist a wheelchair user.
The feedback was brilliant, with one comment standing out in particular:
"It's great to see an organisation investing in its staff like this."
That's exactly why these conversations matter.
A special thank you to Julie Ryder for joining us. With more than 20 years of experience delivering disability awareness workshops, Julie continues to make a huge impact through her knowledge and passion for inclusion.
Thank you to everyone at Carrs Pasties for getting involved.
Disability awareness isn't about treating people differently.
It's about understanding people better.

What a fantastic time it has been delivering so far on the Learn With ESS X Rochdale Sixth Form College enrichment programme for the Year 12 students π
Over the course of four weeks, weβve been working with the students to create experiences around awareness, inclusion, communication, empathy, and understanding through a mixture of practical activities, talks, workshops, and open conversations.
From practical walkthroughs in the shoes of someone with a disability, to masterclasses around concepts such as Braille and sign language, alongside Q&As with individuals who have overcome challenges and barriers in their own lives, it has been brilliant to see the engagement, curiosity, and confidence from the students grow week by week.
The energy, respect, and willingness to learn from the group has honestly been incredible, and weβre excited for the final weeks still to come π
A massive thank you to Nick Wood and the team at Rochdale Sixth Form College for organising and supporting such a powerful opportunity for the young people. Weβre really looking forward to continuing the journey together.
