Last week the Freemen of Newcastle visited the Castle Leazes accommodation redevelopment site.
As well as finding out more about the project, they signed a steel beam which will be integrated into the structure of the first two buildings.
The accommodation is due to open in time for the 2028/2029 academic yearand is a joint venture between the university and Unite Students.
The design for the Castle Leazes redevelopment was shaped through extensive consultation with the local community. It will create 2,000 purpose-built bedrooms and offer increased communal areas, including social hubs, games rooms, study spaces, and outdoor courtyards, designed to foster a sense of community.

We've received more than Β£4M funding from the Office For Students to offer more students the chance to study on our Engineering degrees.
The funding will help create over 370 additional student places across a range of programmes including Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and Electronic and Computer Engineering.
These students will benefit from hands-on experience with state-of-the-art facilities, including a dedicated drone arena designed to support the development, testing and operation of unmanned aerial systems.
They'll also have access to new quadruped robots to gain practical insight into autonomous ground-based systems increasingly used in complex and hazardous environments.
