When our past learner popped back in to assist on a course, we couldn’t help seizing the opportunity to sit her down and find out what her journey had been like since her course ❤️

This is something I get asked all the time by both clients and learners, and after almost 10 years in the industry seeing new terms come and go, I completely understand why it’s so confusing.

The truth is, most of these names come back to just two core techniques: Blading or machine work.

Everything else usually describes the style, pattern or finish created using one of those methods. Different artists use different terminology and that’s actually a great way to market yourself and sound different to your competition.

Here’s a simple guide to the most common terms:

• Microblading / Nanoblading
Hair strokes created with a manual blade. A nanoblade is just a finer microblade, so it creates more realistic hair strokes.

• Ombré / Powder / Machine Brows
A soft shaded or airbrushed effect created with a tattoo machine.

• Nano Brows / Machine Strokes
Hair strokes created using a tattoo machine.

• Combo / Hybrid Brows
Any combination of hairstrokes, shading or techniques.

• Hyper-realism
A stroke pattern designed to mimic natural brow growth (can be created with blade or machine).

• Lip Blush / Ombré Lips / 3D Lips
All created using a machine, with slightly different colour placement and effects.

Different names, same foundations.
