βοΈπΏ Calling in the Sunshine! Celebrating the Summer Solstice at Forest School πΏβοΈ
π§βοΈThe rain and clouds at the start of the week certainly didn't stop us celebrating the Summer Solstice! In fact, we think all of our sun-themed activities may have helped call the sunshine in, as it's been shining brightly for the rest of the week! πβ¨
We've had an amazing time embracing this special seasonal celebration with lots of creative, nature-inspired activities, including:
π¨ Using tools to make our own sun tokens
πΎ Creating sun dreamcatchers and fragrant herb bundles
π¨ Using natural paints to explore light and dark images
βοΈ Sculpting beautiful clay suns
π°οΈ Making our very own sundials
π» Creating stunning sun prints using natural materials
We love being inspired by traditional and nature-based celebrations, helping children connect with the rhythms of the seasons and the world around them. πΏπ
What a wonderful week of sunshine, creativity, learning and outdoor adventure! ππ

π§οΈπ² Forest School Reality Check! π²π§οΈ
When people think about spending time outdoors on rainy days, they often picture a quick wet playtime or an hour in the rain. But a full day outside in torrential, non-stop rain? That's a whole different adventure!
Yesterday, our Forest School group spent the entire day embracing the elements during our Stone Age session, and what a day it was! β
Working outdoors isn't just about getting wet. It's about:
π¦οΈ Adapting plans to suit the weather
πͺ΅ Swapping resources and deciding what can survive a soaking
π Keeping motivation and morale high
π§₯ Drying out kit afterwards
𧽠Cleaning and sorting everything ready for next time
π Knowing when people have reached their limit and need a break
Despite the rain falling relentlessly all day, our group absolutely smashed it!
They:
ποΈ Built natural shelters
πͺ Crafted Stone Age tools and weapons
π¨ Created Stone Age art
π§ Collected rainwater
πΏ Enjoyed plenty of rain showers
π€Έ Jumped in puddles
πΉ Sampled our homemade elderflower cordial
And the best part?
Not one single moan about the rain. Not one.
Just laughter, resilience, teamwork, muddy boots, soggy sleeves and a fantastic attitude from start to finish.
Days like this remind us that some of the best adventures happen when conditions aren't perfect. π§οΈπ¦£π₯
Days like this remind us that a little rain doesn't stop big adventures. π§οΈπ¦£π₯
Days like this remind us that memories are often made in the muddiest, wettest moments. π§οΈπ¦£π₯
Well done everyone β you fully embraced your soggy Stone Age adventure! π§οΈπ¦£π₯

πΏMore children can recognise a brand logo than an elderflower... let's change that!πΏ πΏ
β¨ Teaching children about the world around them is one of the most valuable parts of Forest School β¨πΏ
This time of year is perfect for foraging elderflower πΌ over the last few weeks weβve been getting hands-on learning all about it!
In a world where more children can recognise company logos before native plants, helping children build knowledge and connection with the natural world has never been more important ππ
We are incredibly lucky that our site is full of natural treasures πβ¨ Over time weβve foraged, harvested and created:
πΌ Elderflower cordial
π₯ Elderflower fritters
πΏ Nettle crisps
π― Dandelion honey
π« Blackberry jam
π Damson jam
πΉ Rosehip syrup
π₯§ Cherry pie
But knowledge and education always come first.
Over the last few weeks we have:
π Learnt how to identify elderflower correctly
π± Discussed plants it could be mistaken for and how to safely check identification
π Talked about responsible foraging β taking no more than 25%, leaving plenty for bees and wildlife
π Prepared our elderflowers ready to make delicious elderflower cordial
One of the most important lessons? Just because something grows naturally doesnβt automatically mean itβs safe to eat β οΈ
Some plants are edible πΏ
Some plants are harmful β οΈ
Some plants must be prepared or cooked before eating π₯
We always make sure we are 100% certain what something is and where it came from before consuming it β
This is such an important message for children to learn β curiosity is wonderful, but knowledge and safe practice matter.
Forest School isnβt just about mud and campfires π²π₯ Itβs about creating children who notice, question, understand and value the world around them π
Now we canβt wait to taste the resultsπ₯€β¨

π
On Monday we celebrated a special birthday watching the sun rise over the ocean. Saturday we ended the day paddleboarding on the lake, remembering the short but deeply loved life of our tiniest wildling. π¦πΌ
9 years.
108 months.
3,287 days.
78,888 hours.
9 years sounds like such a big number. So much has happened in that time, yet the day we lost you still feels like yesterday. π
Not a day goes by that we donβt think of you. You are part of all that we do.
Born too soon, too small, and too poorly for this world β but forever part of our story, forever the heart of our woods. πΏπ
πΌπΏOver these years weβve found healing where we feel closest to you β outside, amongst the trees, beside the water, under open skies. Nature has held us through grief in ways words never could.πΏ
Through loss we have also found something we never expected β community. We feel incredibly lucky that grief led us to friendships, support and purpose through where we now collaborate to run monthly Forest School sessions for bereaved families, creating spaces to connect, remember and simply be together. And through the SANDS football team , where bereaved dads find support, understanding and people who just get it.
Forever loved.
Forever missed. π¦πΌ
