Curiosity encourages us to look beyond behaviour and seek understanding. By asking "What might be happening for this young person?" rather than making assumptions, we can build stronger relationships and provide better support.

What if behaviour is communication?
In residential care, behaviour is often the first thing we notice, but it isn't always the thing we need to focus on.
Behind every behaviour is a feeling, a need, or an experience that a young person may not yet have the words to express. By responding with curiosity rather than judgement, we create opportunities to understand what is really happening beneath the surface.
When we shift our perspective from "What's wrong?" to "What might this young person be trying to communicate?", we strengthen relationships, build trust, and provide support that meets the need behind the behaviour.
Because behaviour is often communication before it is anything else.
💬 What helps you stay curious rather than reactive when supporting young people?

When a young person is distressed, dysregulated, or overwhelmed, they may not know why they reacted the way they did. Asking "why?" in the moment can sometimes feel like pressure or blame.
A trauma-informed approach encourages us to stay curious instead. Rather than focusing on what a young person has done, we seek to understand what they might be experiencing, what need is being communicated, and how we can support them.
Curiosity helps us move from judgement to understanding, creating opportunities for learning, growth, and meaningful support.

Building independence starts with the everyday moments.
Making breakfast might seem like a simple task, but for many young people, it's an opportunity to develop essential life skills.
From planning and preparation to decision-making and responsibility, these everyday activities help build confidence and independence. They also create valuable opportunities for conversation, encouragement, and celebrating achievements—no matter how small.
At Footsteps to Futures, we know that learning doesn't just happen in classrooms. Some of the most important lessons are taught through everyday experiences that prepare young people for adult life.
🥣 Today, it's making breakfast. Tomorrow, it's greater confidence in their own abilities.
👉 What everyday life skills do you think have the biggest impact on a young person's independence?

Acceptance is a key part of the PACE approach.
When young people feel understood rather than judged, it helps build trust, strengthen relationships, and create the emotional safety needed for growth and healing.

Ever wondered what a children's home really looks like? 🏡
When people think of residential care, they often picture something very different from the reality.
Our homes are designed to be warm, welcoming, and therapeutic environments where young people can feel safe, comfortable, and supported. Because a home should be more than just a place to live — it should be a place where young people can thrive.
👉 Which part of a home makes you feel most comfortable and welcome?

Mindful Monday 🌿
Big feelings are a part of being human.
When children feel angry, frustrated, worried, or upset, they need to know their emotions are accepted—even when certain behaviours are not.
We can acknowledge a child's feelings while still holding safe, consistent boundaries.
"I can see you're feeling angry right now, and I'm here to help. It's okay to feel angry, but it's not okay to hurt others."
This balance of acceptance and guidance helps children feel understood, safe, and supported as they learn to regulate their emotions.
💭 How do you help children feel heard while maintaining boundaries?

One of our young people has been developing practical life skills in a hands-on and engaging way alongside their mentor 🔨🪵
Working together to build a bench has provided opportunities to learn new skills, build confidence, and strengthen positive relationships—all while having fun along the way.
Sometimes, the best learning happens when we get creative, work together, and enjoy the process.
