Suske & Wiske are famous characters from a comic book series by the same name. Every Dutch person has grown up with the adventures of these siblings and their family and friends. Not just kids, but even grown-ups still read these immensely popular comics.

Reading comic books is an amazing way to practise your Dutch language skills and the visual aids makes it even easier to understand the text.

It's Queen Maxima's birthday. Maxima is Argentinian and she has also learned the Dutch language. What do you say to someone at their birthday (in Dutch 😉 )?

Today it is Hemelvaartsdag. A day to celebrate the ascension of Jesus to the Hemel (heaven). A lot of Dutch people get up early to go Dauwtrappen (kicking dew). They wake up early in the morning and go for a walk. Traditionally, people would walk barefoot, dance, and sing through the dew, which would have natural healing powers.

So today's words of the day are:

Hemel = Heaven
Dauw = Dew
Trappen = Kicking
