Did you know that basil is much more than a fragrant herb? ๐ฑ
Native to the Middle East, basil carries deep cultural significance across the world. ๐ The Greeks placed it at their doors as a symbol of welcome ๐ก, while in India it is considered sacred ๐. In many Middle Eastern countries, it is valued for its medicinal properties ๐.
๐ต๐น In Portugal, basil is known as the herb of lovers and is closely linked to the Popular Saints celebrations:
โจ Saint Anthony (13 June)
โจ Saint John (24 June)
โจ Saint Peter (29 June)
Traditionally, a basil pot is gifted together with a paper carnation ๐บ and a love poem ๐. In the past, giving basil to a loved one was a sign of serious commitmentโalmost like a marriage proposal! ๐
Its short life cycle, from spring growth to autumn fading ๐, symbolizes the fleeting passions of youth and the beauty of cherished memories. Its unmistakable aroma reminds us that some traditions never fade. ๐ฟโจ

๐ Today, on the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, we are reminded that words have power. ๐ฌ They can divide communities, fuel discrimination, and spread fearโbut they can also build understanding, respect, and solidarity. ๐คโจ
๐ฑ In an increasingly digital world, hate speech can spread faster than ever, targeting individuals and groups based on their ethnicity, religion, nationality, gender, disability, or other characteristics. Countering hate speech is not only about rejecting harmful narratives; it is about promoting dialogue, empathy, critical thinking, and inclusion. ๐ฃ๏ธโค๏ธ๐ง
๐ Through the SUDRE Project, we work to empower young people and youth workers with the skills to identify, challenge, and prevent hate speech, radicalisation, and extremism. By fostering media literacy, storytelling, intercultural dialogue, and active citizenship, we can create safer and more inclusive communities for everyone. ๐๐๏ธ๐๐คฒ
๐๏ธ Together, let's choose respect over hate, understanding over division, and inclusion over exclusion. Every voice matters. ๐

๐๐ต๐น Oranges are called "Portugals"! ๐โจ
Did you know that in some countries, oranges are actually called "Portugals"? ๐คฏ๐
This fascinating story dates back to the 15th century, when Portugal ๐ต๐น was exporting sweet oranges across Europe and the Middle East ๐ข๐.
The Portuguese originally acquired citrus varieties from North Africa through the Moors, which is why the Portuguese word for orange is "laranja" ๐, derived from the Arabic word narenciye. Over time, Portuguese growers developed sweeter varieties and became famous traders of these delicious fruits. ๐โจ
๐โ Oranges were highly valued by sailors because their Vitamin C content helped prevent scurvy during long sea voyages. At the time, many regions only had bitter oranges used for cooking and marmalade.
As Portuguese traders introduced sweet oranges to new lands, many people began associating the fruit with Portugal itself! ๐ต๐นโค๏ธ

๐พโจ Dia da Espiga (Corpus Christi) โจ๐พ
๐ According to Catholic tradition, on Ascension Thursday (this year, 14 May), Jesus Christ ascended into heaven 40 days after the Resurrection (Easter). In Portugal ๐ต๐น, this day celebrates both this religious event and the arrival of spring ๐ผ๐ฟ.
๐ More than a religious celebration, it is an ancient ritual deeply connected to nature, the land, and the cycles of life ๐ฑ๐.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ Families traditionally spend the day outdoors, enjoying walks through the countryside ๐ถโโ๏ธ๐ณ, sharing picnics ๐งบ, and creating the traditional Ear of Corn Bouquet ๐พ๐.
โจ The bouquet is made of:
๐พ Ears of wheat
๐บ Poppies
๐ผ Marigolds
๐๏ธ Olive branches
๐ฟ Rosemary
๐ Vine leaves
๐ช It is placed behind the front door and kept for a year as a symbol of good luck, prosperity, health, and protection for the home ๐กโจ.
๐๏ธ This tradition is believed to have roots in ancient Celtic and Roman harvest celebrations, where people gave thanks for the first crops of the year ๐พโ๏ธ. Later, Christianity incorporated the custom into the Feast of the Ascension โ๏ธ.
๐ A traditional Portuguese saying reminds us:
๐พ "Whoever has Ascension wheat will have bread every year." ๐
Each plant in the bouquet carries a special meaning:
๐พ Ears of corn โ Bread, sustenance & fertility
๐บ Poppy โ Love & life โค๏ธ
๐ผ Marigold โ Wealth & prosperity ๐ฐ
๐๏ธ Olive tree โ Peace & divine light โจ
๐ฟ Rosemary โ Health, strength & resilience ๐ช
๐ Vine โ Wine & joy ๐ท๐
๐ A beautiful Portuguese tradition where faith, culture, family, and nature come together.
