New Stakeholders joining your project 🤷Believe it or not, you need to manage this to potentially prevent going backwards 😭

Having someone new join your project can be exciting, but also tiresome at the same time.
Depending on their influence and impact, someone could regularly question aspects of the projects casting doubt in yours and others minds, but also poke holes at the fundamentals causing regression in progress 😩

On the flip side, you could have someone with massive energy becoming your projects biggest supporter🔥

Either way, I've learnt the hard way being push back 6 months because I wasn't on top of my project (a big one at that too).
I never had the fundamentals locked down to adequately answer tough questions.

This is what I wish I knew years ago 👇
✅Engage with him/her immediately
✅Ascertain their impact - director, manager etc
✅Make sure key decisions are documented to buffer new challenges
✅Ensure your risks are upto date
✅Documents are filed correctly
✅Know the Estimate to Complete
✅Know the Schedule Performance Index

Having the above covered shows you in control of your project that will instill confidence with the new stakeholder(s) 💯
Especially having decisions rejected previously that are documented is easier have them unearthed again.

This strategy is particularly useful in high-turnover industries!

Schedule variance is another good part of Earned Value Management to understand where you are in terms of progress on your project.

If you SV is positive that is good, but make sure to keep at it and maintain a positive SV. However, your SV is negative you will need to think of a recovery plan to pull back some progress.

Cost variance is something I always use to track how my project is doing versus what we planned.

There are several benefits to using CV, especially for reporting. A quick overview stating that the CV is positive is sometimes more than enough.

However, if it is negative you will need to understand why and have a plan to get the budget back on track.

Change is a constant in any project, but the implementation is slightly different everywhere.

I found GE's approach to accelerating change interesting in the fact that creating a shared need at the beginning sets the scene for the rest of the process.

Additionally, there is an acknowledgement that systems and structures need to change with that change.

In previous companies I have noticed systems and structures remain the same, despite fundamental changing happening.

There are many change models out there, but I always found Lewin's Change Model the simplest to implement.

Applying good communication techniques before implementation goes a long way in engaging stakeholders who may be resistant.

Once the change starts being rolled out, its key to provide support with constant engagement. This is crucial because if the correct systems and platforms are not in place the change could fall apart quickly.

Finally, refreeze solidifies and recognises the good and lessons learned from the change.

and importance, making sure you focus on what really matters.

I knew there was a process issue, but I couldn't put my finger on it 👇

Enter DMAIC method...

After months of inefficiency, we knew something had to be done. However, instead of jumping at the first solution, we took a strategic approach to rectify the issue. We implemented the DMAIC model over the course of 4 weeks with discussions and reflection, whilst analysis the data that we had.

My conclusion is that the methodology works, but you need to gather the relevant data to make informed decisions to sufficiently improve the process.

Competing Values Framework (CVF) highlights the tensions of two key fundamentals within an Project - individuals and teams.

Collaborate and Complete - working together, but working fast at the same time. This doesn't always work depending on the personalities within the team. Situational leadership is key here to balance and manage the team effectively.

Control and Create - doing things right with stability, but at the same time being the first through innovation and creativity. Very challenging when trying to push the boundaries whilst not making mistakes and learning.

There are many other leadership models out there, but I found this one made me think twice about the bigger picture before residing in one or another segment.

I always want everyone to have input into Project decisions 👋

However, I don't recommend this all the time.

There is a place and time for this.

These are my thoughts:

1) I didn't always get convergence, so decisions took longer than necessary

2) I didn't want to upset anyone, so I consulted too much instead of leading

3) Sometimes it is better to be authoritative to move forward when the time is right

4) People feel valued when they contribute and are heard, but it is also important to convey to the team when a decision must be made. This prevents

This is how I lead multi-disciplinary teams...

Working in engineering you encounter different departments - mechanical, civil, electrical, procurement, commercial..the list goes on..

You can’t take a blanket approach..you will go nowhere so I take an agile and situational approach with different teams and team members at different times depending on the needs.

What I admire most about this model is that it reiterates leadership is not one size fits all and that there are so many variables to consider on a Project.
