We love celebrating our students achievements, so we are thrilled with Lucy Burns, one of our senior students, who is not only a stunning performer but also an extremely talented creative designer. 🌟
Lucy won a Commended Award for Costume Design in the Royal Ballet and Opera's National Design Challenge, for engagement with the piece.
The Royal Ballet and Opera's Design Challenge is a national, skills-based design competition that gives students the chance to work to a brief inspired by a Royal Ballet and Opera production. This year’s challenge was based on three alternative visions set by Creative Associate opera director Thomas Guthrie, for the opera Das Rheingold. Das Rheingold (in English, ‘The Gold of the River Rhine’) is set in a world of gods, giants, and mythical beings, where the pursuit of wealth leads to corruption and downfall. It is an opera by composer Richard Wagner.
Lucy’s response to the brief was to design costumes for the characters based on a Modern resetting of the Opera where the Gods were 20s Mobsters and the Giants their enforcers.
The exhibition of the winning work from the Design Challenge will be on public display in the Linbury Foyer at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden from 11 – 30 June 2026. challenge2026
