We create quality, accessible performance work, working in the outdoors and in response to specific Nutkhut has been delighting audiences since 2003.

We are a major presence in the outdoor performing arts sector, and work regularly with festivals and events across the UK and beyond. Nutkhut is led by two British Asian artists, Simmy Gupta and Ajay Chhabra. The company is unique as it draws inspiration from the Artistic Directors’ backgrounds and mixes it with a very British sense of humour and mischief. Nutkhut is highly representative of modern Britain. We create work which could only have come from the here and now.

🎬 On 14 May, we launched Girmit 360 and proved something important.

Hidden histories can be told. With honesty, integrity, and limited resources, it can be done.

Time and again, tech companies, journalists and broadcasters have asked us how. The answer is simple: when an idea is relevant and approached with integrity, it draws the right people in.

Simmy Gupta co Artistic Director of Nutkhut, put it perfectly: “Girmit 360 shows what’s possible when artists and communities lead with truth. This is exactly the kind of work the arts should be doing, giving voice to stories that have been overlooked for too long.”

On the same day, London marked the inaugural Girmit Day, the very first time this day has ever been commemorated in the capital, by bringing together first generation British Fijians to listen, share, and hear from their own authentic voices.

The room is starting to fill, and we are beyond excited for the Girmit 360 immersive animation premier to begin.

A 360° immersive film honouring the Girmityas — the indentured labourers who crossed oceans and built new worlds — premieres on YouTube TODAY at 2:30pm BST.

On 14 May 1879, the first ship carrying indentured labourers from India landed in Fiji. The workers called their indenture contract their girmit — a corruption of the English word “agreement” — and from that moment, a people and a diaspora were made. This Thursday 14 May at 1430 GMT, award winning arts company Nutkhut marks that anniversary with the world premiere of Girmit: a 360° film that puts you inside that history.

Step inside Girmit and discover the journeys of the Girmityas with this immersive experience created by Nutkhut with global partners and creative freelancers.
