May 25, Africa celebrates African Union (AU) Day - a day that honours the spirit of Pan-Africanism, African unity, liberation, and the collective vision for a prosperous continent.
The day traces its origins to May 25, 1963, when 32 independent African states gathered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to establish the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the predecessor of today’s African Union (AU). The formation of the OAU marked a historic moment in Africa’s journey toward solidarity, self-determination, and freedom from colonialism and apartheid.
Today, AU Day is more than a commemoration of political unity. It is a celebration of Africa’s rich history, diverse cultures, intellectual traditions, scientific achievements, and the resilience of its people. It reminds Africans everywhere of the importance of cooperation in addressing contemporary challenges and shaping a future built on peace, innovation, development, and African agency.Day 2026
As we celebrate AU Day 2026, we honour the visionaries who dreamed of a united Africa and reaffirm our commitment to preserving and promoting African knowledge, heritage, and achievements for future generations.
Happy African Union Day!
