UHAS and RGHI Lead Landmark Forum on Menstrual Hygiene and Adolescent Mental Health

The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), in partnership with the Rickett Global Hygiene Institute (RGHI), convened a high-profile dissemination forum on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at its Fred N. Binka School of Public Health, Hohoe campus, under the theme “Breaking the Silence: Menstrual Hygiene Management and Adolescent Mental Health in Ghana.”

The event brought together researchers, government officials, traditional leaders, educators, health professionals and students to share findings from a three-and-a-half-year fellowship project led by Dr. Sitsofe Gbogbo. The study explored the link between menstrual health and adolescent mental well-being across five districts in the Volta Region, addressing a subject long stigmatized and under-researched in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Vice Chancellor of UHAS, Professor Lydia Aziato, highlighted the severe physical and psychological toll of menstruation, including cases of dysmenorrhoea which were so debilitating that they triggered suicidal thoughts. She urged communities to challenge cultural taboos, normalize menstruation as a natural process and provide judgment-free family planning services.

Dr. Gbogbo’s research revealed alarming statistics: 41% of surveyed girls reported mild depressive symptoms, 22% moderate depression and 23% severe anxiety. Among boys, over half demonstrated poor knowledge and negative attitudes toward menstruation. The fellowship produced six peer-reviewed publications, secured international collaboration for menstrual cup interventions and inspired further doctoral research.

The Keynote Speaker, Professor Smile Gavua Dzisi, Deputy Director General of the Ghana Education Service, stressed that silence and stigma, not biology, are the greatest barriers, linking poor menstrual health management to absenteeism, early dropout and diminished ambitions. She pledged GES’ full partnership in building a “period-friendly Ghana.”

The Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive, Honourable Prosper Kumi, announced new mandates for changing rooms in schools and the distribution of 8,000 sanitary pad sets to vulnerable girls.

A five-member expert panel framed menstrual health as a human rights issue, calling for policy harmonization, affordable local sanitary products and stronger parent-child communication.

The forum also launched the RGHI Research Book of Abstracts, described by Mrs. Naana Yelson of the National Vaccines Institute as a vital evidence base for shaping health, education and gender policy.

Distinguished guests at the ceremony included senior UHAS leadership, traditional authorities, development partners and students from secondary schools and institutions for the visually and hearing impaired.

The event, themed “Wellness and Balance Through Yoga”, was a collaborative effort between the Indian High Commission, UHAS Institute of Traditional and Alternative Medicine (ITAM) and UHAS School of Sports and Exercise Medicine (SSEM).

Prof. Nii Korley Kortei, Dean of SSEM, highlighted yoga’s holistic benefits, noting its role in promoting physical health, mental well-being and inner peace. He urged participants to embrace yoga as part of their daily routine.

Israeli Embassy in Ghana Strengthens Ties with UHAS

The Israeli Embassy in Ghana has paid a courtesy call on the Management of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), signaling a new chapter of collaboration in education, research, nutrition science and technological innovation.

The discussions centered on deepening institutional links between UHAS and Israeli universities, with opportunities for joint master’s and PhD programmes that would allow Ghanaian students to gain practical training and research experience in Israel. Other areas of focus included collaboration through the MASHAV International Development Cooperation Programme, access to competitive alumni grants, direct engagement with Israeli innovation hubs such as IDC Herzliya University and the Jerusalem Innovation Hub, and faculty exchange initiatives.

UHAS leadership affirmed its commitment to partnerships that enhance healthcare education and international research. A highlight of the meeting was the recognition of five MASHAV alumni currently serving as faculty in the Department of Diet at UHAS School of Allied Health Sciences.
The Vice Chancellor of UHAS, Professor Lydia Aziato, praised Israel’s groundbreaking research in nutrition and its Nobel laureates, noting that formal collaboration with Israeli institutions would fill a significant gap in UHAS’ network of over ninety international partnerships across North America, Europe and Africa.

The Deputy Chief of Mission, Mr. Aviel Avraham, expressed admiration for UHAS’ scenic campus, describing it as one of the most beautifully situated institutions he had visited. Drawing on his own journey from refugee to diplomat, he emphasized the transformative power of education. He praised the MASHAV alumni at UHAS as a “source of immense potential” and pledged to leverage their presence to expand collaboration. He further encouraged UHAS faculty to apply directly to Israeli universities for academic development opportunities and highlighted grants available to alumni for implementing development projects.

Present at the meeting were the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Frank Edwin, Dean of International Programmes, Professor Elvis Tarkang, Director of Information Communication Technology (ICT), Mr. Patrick De-Souza and faculty members from the Department of Diet.

Mr. Avraham was accompanied by Mr. Joseph Appiah-Dolphyne, Press and Digital Diplomacy Coordinator at the Israeli Embassy.

The visit forms part of the Embassy’s broader stakeholder engagement strategy to expand bilateral academic ties, grow the MASHAV alumni network across Ghana and West Africa, and foster direct partnerships in research and innovation between Israeli and Ghanaian institutions.

UHAS Explores Partnership with ONYX Group to Drive Innovation in Education

The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) has engaged ONYX Group, aimed at forging partnership opportunities towards nurturing innovation in education and strengthening international collaboration. The session was held on Friday, June 5, 2026, at the Vice Chancellor’s Conference Room, Central Administration Block, Main Campus, Sokode-Lokoe, Ho

Professor Lydia Aziato, Vice Chancellor of UHAS, highlighted the university’s rapid rise as one of Ghana’s leading health sciences institutions despite its relatively young age. She emphasized UHAS’ growing reputation in health professions education, research and community service, noting its contributions to health and well-being research both nationally and internationally.

Prof. Aziato also addressed challenges facing the university, including inadequate student accommodation, limited infrastructure and the high cost of training health professionals. She appealed to private investors and development partners to support projects such as student hostels, staff housing, recreational facilities, ICT infrastructure and scholarship programmes. Expressing optimism, she stressed that strategic investments and partnerships would be pivotal in accelerating UHAS’ mission.

The ONYX Group delegation, led by Mr. Delali Kotoka presented the Scious Immersion Ghana programme as a platform for fostering collaboration, exchanging ideas and building lasting partnerships. They explained that the programme is anchored by the upcoming eLearning Africa Conference 2026 in Accra, combining global thought leadership with practical learning experiences through visits to educational institutions, innovation hubs, policy centres and cultural sites across Ghana. Other members of the delegation were Dr. Isaac Addae, Dr. Watechia Lawless, Robert Turner and Dr. Angela Addae.

The meeting concluded with discussions on future collaborations and a shared commitment to advancing education, leadership, innovation and international partnerships.
