Ghana’s Young Spelling Champion Eugene Osei Mensah Pays Courtesy Call on Embassy of Ghana in Washington DC, USA :
11-year-old National Spelling Bee Ghana winner inspires with story of discipline, courage, and excellence on the global stage

Eugene Osei Mensah, winner of the 2026 National Spelling Bee Ghana competition, paid a courtesy call on the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C., during his participation in the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States.

The young spelling prodigy from Peniel Academy in Kumasi was accompanied by a delegation from the National Spelling Bee Ghana programme, who commended his outstanding achievement and highlighted Ghana’s continued participation in the globally recognized educational competition.
Also with him was Nigeria's Newton Temojo, Scripps Spellingbee 2026 champion.

Representing Ghana at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Eugene said, was one of the greatest experiences of his life and a proud moment not only for himself but for young Africans everywhere. He pleaded foe support to help boost the confidence in the Ghanaian child since Scripps is American dominated.

“Being part of this experience reminds me that African children also belong on global stages and can achieve amazing things when given the opportunity,” he added.

Officials of the National Spelling Bee Ghana programme explained that the initiative goes beyond spelling competitions and serves as an educational platform that strengthens literacy, communication skills, confidence, and academic excellence among children.

The Convener of the programme noted that Ghana has participated in the Scripps National Spelling Bee for nearly two decades and remains one of only two African countries currently represented in the competition alongside Nigeria.

Although Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Emmanuel Victor Smith, was out of town during the visit, officials of the Embassy t promoting young people and encouraging them to develop the skills and confidence needed to compete on the global stage,” the official said.
