The latest incident in the Suez Canal, shaked the world economy and proved how vulnerable the global supply chain can be. It was mentioned in the news extraordinary numbers related to the financial impact but actual now will commence calculating the “bill”. What if....? It can happen anytime, to anybody, any type of vessel. Are you ready and prepared? Despite the unfortunate position of the vessel involved in a similar incident, we could easily be on the position of the other vessels called to hold their position and cope with the adverse situation. Same scenario, on the same position with relevant incident in the Ismailia and Suez port area is already held in CTMS more than two years now for a reputable shipping company with Tankers but also for Containerships. The course is called “Transiting of Straights and Canals” and brings the officers as close as possible to the real challenges facing during Suez Canal Transit. Our trainees that already passed this course hopefully they will be thankful and appreciate even more the initiative of their company that enroll them for their participation. Stay safe.

After the Greek Government’s Health Care measures, in order to fight the Covid-19 we stay home and we protect each other. Hope this matter ends as soon as possible for all mankind with the best outcome. The importance of following the COLREG and the implications on safe navigation. Are we following the COLREG in our days or do we make "everything" as long as we can avoid the collision?
COLREG issues and refresh of the rules together with extensive practice on the Bridge Simulator are performed in our newly entered course "Collision Avoidance".

Collision between containerships.
Who to blame?
What were the proper actions of the Navigating officers that should be done?
Are the Navigating officers aware of the COLREG and do they implement it properly?
Is there any need for COLREG refresh to the officers?
Masters and Office staff should start to worry about that.
Costamare Maritime Training Center introduces the newly created specific and tailor made course regarding (Collision avoidance - COLREG refresh) that would assist the Navigating officers to refresh and exercise their knowledge by using the Bridge Simulator in a real case scenarios.

Another sad accident that involved seamen's lives. Unacceptable in our days, lives & ships to be wasted due to bad practices, improper ships loading, bad maintenance and lack of knowledge on ship's handling.

Hull crack caused capsizing of the ore carrier Stellar Daisy in South Atlantic
Hull crack was the root cause of sinking of very large ore carrier Stellar Daisy in South Atlantic, according to the witness evidence from the two rescued Filipino sailors. The vessel capsized after developing heavy list of more than 15 degrees. The Two sailors arrived on starboard deck for evacuation on the lifeboat, but due to heavy list it was not possible, so they released the life raft. There were another people with life jackets and immersion suits on the deck and all jumped into the water to board the raft. The rescued seamen never saw the other people from the ship, but presumed that they also jumped and boarded another life rafts.
The survivors mentioned cracks on the main deck, through which water was flooding in. According to their suggestions, the very large ore carrier Stellar Daisy suffered structural hull damages and cracks, which caused the fast sinking and the large number of missing people. The both survivors believe that the rest of the crew might be alive.
The search and rescue operation continue, engaging airplane of Brazil and Uruguayan navy vessels. Also four merchant ships joined the SAR operations and also Polaris Shipping’s three merchant ships expected to arrive early that day too. Brazilian destroyer equipped with a rescue helicopter was expected to reach the scene on April 4.
The very large ore carrier Stellar Daisy (IMO: 9038725) capsized and sank in South Atlantic on 1,500 nautical miles off Uruguay. The vessel had 24 crew, including 8 South Korean and 16 Filipino on board, but only two Filipinos were rescued. Another 22 people are still missing.
