📚🇬🇷 Why study Ancient Greek in Athens?

Our student Melanie traveled all the way from Florida to study Ancient Greek at Alexander Greek Language School and immerse herself in the culture, history, and language of Greece.

✨ As Melanie explains:

💬 "I specifically chose the Alexander Greek Language School because it was important to me to study the language where it originated. Studying in Athens is especially meaningful because my academic goal is to better understand Ancient Greek history and its economy. Many of the sources I will study are centered on Athens."

🏛️ "I also wanted to spend time exploring the culture of Athens while visiting important historical sites such as the Acropolis and the Agora."

💬 "My time at the school has been an excellent experience. The school has provided many opportunities to try traditional foods, learn Greek dances, watch Greek films, and participate in other cultural activities."

💬 "Because of this experience, I feel more prepared to continue working toward translating ancient sources. This program has confirmed that studying Ancient Greek is a worthwhile endeavor."

Thank you, Melanie, for sharing your experience with us! We wish you every success in your future studies. ❤️

Discovering Kypseli: One of Athens’ Most Vibrant Neighbourhoods 🇬🇷✨

Hidden in the heart of Athens, Kypseli is one of the city’s most fascinating neighbourhoods. 🌿🏙️

Once a quiet area with gardens and vineyards, Kypseli became one of the most elegant neighbourhoods of Athens during the 20th century. Today, it is famous for its multicultural atmosphere, beautiful architecture, artistic energy, cafés, theatres, and lively streets full of life. ✨

Walking around Fokionos Negri, you can discover old Athenian apartment buildings, local markets, modern cafés, traditional taverns, and hidden cultural spots. Every corner of Kypseli tells a different story about the history and everyday life of Athens. ☕🎭

One of our favourite activities is taking our students there for dinner after lessons. Sharing meze, listening to Greek music, practicing Greek with locals, and enjoying the warm atmosphere of the neighbourhood helps students experience authentic Athenian culture beyond the classroom. 🇬🇷🍷

A special favourite is Pame Tsipouro Pame Kafeneio | Fokionos, a traditional mezedopoleio where food, music, and conversation come together in the most Greek way possible. 🎶🍽️

Kypseli is not simply a neighbourhood — it is a small world inside Athens full of history, cultures, flavours, and unforgettable moments. ❤️

🇬🇷✨ A Journey to Sounio with Our A2 Students ✨🇬🇷

This week, we visited the beautiful Cape Sounio together with our A2 students to explore one of the most magical places in Greece: the Temple of Poseidon! 🏛️🌊

Standing above the Aegean Sea, the ancient temple offered us the perfect opportunity to learn more about Greek mythology, history, and the famous legend of King Aegeus and Theseus. Our students experienced Greek culture outside the classroom while practicing the language in a real and inspiring environment. 🇬🇷📚

Of course, there was also one very important question of the day… 🤔
Is the sea finally warm enough for swimming? 🌞🏖️

With the incredible view, the sea breeze, and the famous sunset of Sounio, it was a day full of history, culture, laughter, and summer feelings!

Life at School: A Student from Uruguay Created an AI School Hymn for Our Athens School - School of Greek Language & Culture “Alexander the Great” - Greek Language lessons in Athens, Thessaloniki and Chania - Learn Modern and Ancient Greek in... 18/05/2026

What happens when a student from Uruguay spends 10 weeks learning Greek in Athens? 🇬🇷✨

Apparently… an AI-generated school hymn is born! 😄🎶

This hilarious and surprisingly accurate song captures everyday life at our Athens school:
📚 Greek grammar struggles
☕ desperate frappé needs
🏛️ museums and cultural activities
🥙 endless Greek food cravings
🎭 Mr. Kostas’ legendary history stories
🍪 and Irini entering classrooms with snacks and activity announcements

Written in English, Greek, and Spanish, the hymn perfectly reflects the international atmosphere of our school and the friendships created through learning Greek in Greece.

For us, this was more than just a funny song — it was a beautiful reminder that learning a language is also about shared experiences, creativity, humor, and becoming part of a community.

A huge thank you to our wonderful student from Uruguay for this unforgettable contribution to school life in Athens! ❤️

🎶🏛️ LIFE AT SCHOOL: A NIGHT OF GREEK POETRY & MUSIC 🇬🇷✨

Last Tuesday, our school transformed into a different era during a very special cultural evening at our beautiful neoclassical building in Athens.

Our teacher and tour guide Sotiris, together with his band, presented the concert «Όση Αγάπη Απομείνει Μέχρι τον Επόμενο Πόλεμο» — an emotional musical journey inspired by Greek poets of the interwar and mid-war period. 🎼📖

For one evening, music, poetry, history, and the atmosphere of old Athens came together perfectly. The warm lights, the neoclassical architecture, and the live performance created a truly cinematic setting. ✨

Students from all over the world attended alongside Greek guests and friends of the school, sharing an authentic cultural experience beyond the classroom. 🌍❤️

Because learning Greek is not only about grammar — it is also about music, emotions, culture, and unforgettable moments together.

A big thank you to Sotiris and his band for this magical evening! 👏🎵

🎶🇬🇷 Proud of Our Students: Bernard Greek Student in Athens 🇬🇷🎶

Our wonderful student Bernard joined us in Athens for two weeks of intensive B2 Greek lessons — but his Greek journey did not stop in the classroom! 📚✨

Alongside his language lessons, he also took bouzouki classes with our partner music teacher and amazed us with his fast progress in only a few lessons. 🎵

On his final day, Bernard gave a beautiful live performance at our school and filled our classrooms with music, emotion, and smiles. ❤️

Moments like these remind us that learning Greek is not only about grammar and vocabulary. It is also about culture, music, friendship, and unforgettable experiences.

We are especially proud because Bernard is also a PhD in Medicine — proof that passion for learning and culture has no limits. 👏

Thank you, Bernard, for becoming part of our school family. We hope to see you again soon in Athens for more Greek, more bouzouki, and more beautiful moments! 🇬🇷✨

☀️ Out of Class Activities: a sunny museum day in Athens 🇬🇷📚

This week our students enjoyed a beautiful cultural walk in sunny Athens with our teacher Vasiliki! 💚

Our day started in the green school yard, under the warm early May sun that already feels like Greek summer ☀️🌿 before heading to the home and museum of the great Greek poet Odysseas Elytis.

Elytis, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, is one of the most important voices of modern Greece. His poetry is full of light, sea, islands, freedom, and the colors of the Aegean 🌊✨

The museum, located in beautiful Plaka, gave our students the opportunity to discover not only Greek literature, but also another side of Greek culture and history.

And of course… no cultural walk is complete without a coffee stop 😉☕
After the visit we relaxed at the picturesque Vrisaki Cafe, where a funny sign says:

“Entrance allowed only to fans of art, smiles & cold handmade lemonade” 🍋🎨😊

Luckily, our students qualified immediately 😄

At our school, learning Greek continues far beyond the classroom walls ❤️
