Cysteamine doesn’t cause photosensitivity like hydroquinone does.

Here’s why they’re different:

Hydroquinone + sun = bad combo
HQ itself isn’t directly “photosensitizing” like retinol. The problem is:
•⁠ ⁠ROS generation: HQ oxidizes to benzoquinone + H₂O₂. UV makes that ROS burst worse → more inflammation, more PIH.
•⁠ ⁠Barrier damage: HQ irritation thins/peels the stratum corneum, so UV gets deeper.
•⁠ ⁠Ochronosis risk: Sun + HQ long-term increases blue-black ochronosis risk.

So derms say “HQ is sun-sensitive” because UV amplifies all its side effects.

Cysteamine + sun

Cysteamine 7% actually does the opposite:
•⁠ ⁠Antioxidant: Cysteamine is a thiol. It scavenges ROS and H₂O₂. So UV-induced oxidative stress gets neutralized instead of amplified.
•⁠ ⁠No peeling/retinoids: Cyspera has no acids or retinol. Your barrier stays intact, so less UV pe*******on.
•⁠ ⁠Anti-inflammatory: Isobionic amide reduces UV-induced IL-6/IL-8. Less inflammation = less PIH.

Clinical trials show Cysteamine doesn’t increase sun sensitivity. You still must wear SPF because melasma itself is 100% UV-triggered, not because Cysteamine makes you burn.
