Have you wondered what is the ultimate engineer in nature? Beavers!

Driven by instinct, beavers gather branches, mud, and stones to build dams across rivers, creating ponds and wetlands that support their survival; provide habitats for many other species; and foster biodiversity.

What’s more: dams built by beavers are powerful carbon sinks, capturing and storing carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. This process helps lower greenhouse gas levels and supports the fight against climate change. At the same time, these dams slow down the water flow, which also reduce the risk of drought and flood.

It’s no wonder beavers are “dam experts”! They also help fight climate change and prevent natural disasters, which made them truly the hidden champions of nature engineer!

In our previous post, we shared that when older adults feel their memory is worsening, it may already be an early warning sign that should not be neglected. But what can be done to detect the risk of dementia at an earlier stage?

Prof. Agnes Chan and her research team used Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) technology to successfully identify individuals at high risk of dementia through measuring participants’ cerebral hemodynamics while they performed memory tasks of varying difficulty levels.

The team has combined fNIRS with algorithms, making it a CUHK-exclusive technology that has successfully obtained 4 U.S. patents, with a lighter and more portable device currently in development.

Early detection is the first step in preventing dementia. If you are interested in participating in the research programme, sign up now!

Is your elderly family member becoming more forgetful? Struggling to recall names, misplacing things more often - is this just normal ageing, or could it be an early warning sign from the brain?

Prof. Agnes Chan pointed out that the degeneration in dementia did not start from overt behaviors, but from physiological changes in the brain.

Her research found that receiving a “pass” in the standard assessment does not imply that there is no risk. Individuals with severe Subjective Memory Complaint (SMC), demonstrated patterns of brain activity similar to those of patients with amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI).

When older adults feel their memory is worsening, it may already be an early warning sign that should not be neglected.

Stay tuned for our next post, where we'll share how Prof. Chan’s team is using innovative technology to identify high-risk individuals at the preclinical stage.

Prof. CHAN Sui-Yin Agnes, Chairperson and Professor of the Department of Psychology, FSSC, Director of the Research Centre for Neuropsychological Well-Being at CUHK, has long been dedicated to research on early assessment of dementia, hoping to help older adults maintain a healthy brain. Prof. Chan recently shared her groundbreaking research findings with the media. She and her team have successfully used Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) technology to screen high-risk individuals for dementia, helping patients and caregivers to intervene at the preclinical stage and slow deterioration.

The team conducted fNIRS tests on 151 participants, measuring cerebral hemodynamics while participants performed high-difficulty memory tasks. The team has also developed a lighter and more portable fNIRS device and obtained 4 U.S. patents. Prof. Chan announced that she would launch a three-year free dementia risk assessment research programme in March, aiming to screen 1,000 citizens aged 40 or above.

Prof. Chan said, “By observing how the brain responds to difficult tasks, measuring cerebral hemodynamics, and analyzing them with algorithms, we can detect early functional decline.”

Ever thought saying ‘I’m getting old’ is no big deal? Turns out, the more you say it, the faster you age!

A joint study by American and French universities analyzed data from 17,000 middle-aged and older Americans, found that people who feel older than their actual age experience faster decline in both brain and physical function—and even face a higher risk of mortality.

Those who perceive themselves as 8 years older than their real age show an 18% increase in mortality risk. If they feel 13 years older, that risk jumps to 25%. Our mindset would indeed impact our body and health!

Keep your youthful energy alive and stop saying “I’m old” now!!
