Medical Imaging
Radiation Therapy

Medical Imaging vs Radiation Therapy: The differences you may need to know!
After graduation, both may become radiographers - but do you really know the difference between Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy?
We can simply say:
One helps patients find answers.
The other supports patients as they go through treatments.
Medical Imaging is like being a “body detective”.
A patient may have chest pain, an injury, a suspected tumour, or may need a follow-up check. Medical Imaging professionals use technologies such as X-ray, CT, MRI and breast imaging to turn invisible clues inside the body into evidence that helps the medical team make clinical decisions. It is not just about pressing buttons — it requires professional clinical judgement.
Radiation Therapy is like being a “precision treatment engineer” and a companion.
Many patients you meet are already facing cancer. They are not coming in for just one examination; they are beginning a treatment journey, and you are there to support them through it. You will study oncology, treatment techniques, treatment planning, physics and radiation safety. Using this knowledge, you help design treatment plans for patients, where every step must be accurate and carefully delivered.
In Hong Kong, radiographers are not simply people who “know how to operate machines”. They are regulated healthcare professionals with different areas of specialisation.
Graduates of Medical Imaging may become Diagnostic Radiographers.
Graduates of Radiation Therapy may become Therapeutic Radiographers or Radiation Therapists.
The names may sound similar, but their missions are different.
If you enjoy solving problems, love anatomy, want to encounter different clinical cases, and hope to help patients find direction at the diagnostic frontline, Medical Imaging may be suitable for you.
If you value patient companionship, care deeply about cancer patients, enjoy precise planning, and want to turn science into part of a patient’s treatment journey, Radiation Therapy may be suitable for you.
At Tung Wah College, students in both programmes start learning relevant professional knowledge from Year 1. They are also required to complete a total of 36 weeks of clinical practicum within four years, applying what they have learned in real clinical settings.
Tung Wah College do not only teach you knowledge and skills. We also teach you how to turn what you have learned into care, that is: Safe, Accurate and Compassionate.
