From ”Hated“ to Celebrated!😇️
Can sensory play turn a completely refused food into a win? Today, we tackled hard-boiled eggs (and that tricky yolk!) using the SOS Approach to Feeding.
Here is how zero pressure and a little imagination made it happen:
💥 Find the Sensory ”Sweet Spot“~
Crushing the eggshells was his favorite part. This sensory play regulated his nervous system, making him feel safe and calm.
🌙 Spark Imagination~
We just looked, peeled, smelled, and described. He got creative, telling me his crushed shell pieces looked like a crescent moon and an eclipse. No pressure to eat!
🐜 Keep Bites ”Ant-Sized“~
Big pieces are overwhelming. Inspired by ants he saw this morning, we tried an ”ant-bite-sized“ speck of yolk on his egg white. He did it!
🥒 Honor Their Boundaries
After a few bites, he asked to switch to zucchini. We said yes! (He only met zucchini last week—huge win!). Trusting his boundary earned us a promise: ”I’ll try egg again tomorrow... if I can crush shells!“
💡 The Takeaway
Success isn’t a clean plate; it‘s a child willing to try again tomorrow. Keep the pressure low, the bites tiny, and let them play!

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭: "𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥!" 🏠🔴
We reached our goal! In just 90 days, we moved from a handful of words to functional, independent communication.
𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝟒: 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞
Using the 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲, we focused on the final pieces of the puzzle:
🌟 Pronouns: Teaching the power of "I" (e.g., "I fix", "I want ball").
🌟 Social Language: Practicing "my turn" and "thank you" to make speech functional for real-world interaction.

𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲 🦷🐶
Three months in, and the progress was undeniable! We introduced the 𝙋𝙚𝙩 𝘿𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙚 to challenge his growing vocabulary with new concepts and descriptors.
𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝟑: 𝐕𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 & 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
At this level, we moved beyond basic requests into descriptive play:
🌟Adjectives: Learning the difference between Clean and Dirty or Sore and Wide.
🌟Vocabulary: Introducing specialized nouns like Toothpaste and Dentist.
By diversifying the themes, we kept the child engaged while naturally stretching his ability to use longer, more varied sentences.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 🧱
Once our 2-year-old friend mastered his core "Bath Time" vocabulary, it was time to level up. We moved to 𝘽𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘽𝙡𝙤𝙘𝙠𝙨 to bridge the gap between single words and early phrases.
𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝟐: 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭
Success at this stage isn’t just about naming the "Block"—it’s about what we do with it.
🌟Action-Oriented: We prioritized verbs like Push, Put, and Knock down.
🌟Ownership: We introduced possessives like "my Tower" and "your Block" to add complexity.
Collaborative effort between the clinic and home support ensured that every tower built was a new opportunity for a 2-word phrase.

𝟏𝟎 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬—𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝟗𝟎-𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 🚀
What can happen in just 3 months? In February, a 2-year-4-month-old boy joined my practice with just over 10 words. Today, he is confidently using 3-word phrases and clear sentences!
To kick off this success story series, we’re starting where it all began: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙩𝙪𝙗.
𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝟏: 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐕𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐲
At the single-word level, we turned a daily routine into a language lab.
🌟The Strategy: Instead of just "washing," we focused on functional labels like Duck and Soap, and simple positions like In and Out.
🌟The Team: I shared this guide with the parents and their domestic helper (who joined every session!) so the child heard the same targets all day long.
Consistency is the catalyst for breakthroughs. Stay tuned for my next post, where we move from the tub to the playroom to build the foundation for phrases!

What an enjoyable therapy session! 🧙♀️ We read the enchanting story ~ ᖇOOᗰ Oᑎ TᕼE ᗷᖇOOᗰ, discovering the importance of teamwork, kindness and inclusivity. 😇✨ Children practised compound sentences when talking about how the characters helped each other. Plus, we got creative and crafted our very own witch's hats!! 🎩🔮
