Does your child’s writing often sound basic and lack depth?

When writing essays, it is incredibly easy to fall back on the words we are most comfortable with. However, relying on the same familiar vocabulary over time creates a habit of repeating words instead of exploring stronger, more dynamic alternatives.

Take a look at today's spotlight vocabulary transformation:

❌ Overused Word: SHOW
✨ Capstone Alternative: ILLUSTRATE
💡 Why "Illustrate?

It Demands Evidence: While "show" simply points out a baseline fact, "illustrate" actively signals to the reader that a specific example or data point is being deployed to prove a larger thesis.

It Shifts Prose from Passive to Active: It takes the student out of a primary-school "show and tell" mindset and moves them into rigorous, secondary-level literary analysis.

⚠️ When Not to Use "Illustrate"

Although we highly recommend upgrading to "illustrate," it is important to remember that it is not a one-size-fits-all replacement. Good academic writing relies on absolute precision, and there are specific situations where "illustrate" actually breaks the logic of your sentence, and "show" is required instead!

Physical Visibility: Use "show" when an object is visible to the human eye.

Direct Data Readouts: Use "show" when an instrument or tool is simply giving data without deeper meaning.

Step-by-Step Instructions: Use "show" when explaining or demonstrating a physical action.

🏅 At the South Asian Schools Debating Championship 2026, our debaters delivered a powerhouse performance, claiming the Novice Championship title, advancing to the Semifinals and Quarterfinals, and earning a standout sweep of Overall, ESL, and Novice speaker awards!

🎤 At the Joint Universities Debating Championship 2026, our students rose to every challenge, securing the Schools Championship, reaching the Open Final and Schools Final, and dominating the speaker rankings with a remarkable range of Overall and School Finals honours!

🌏 At the Asia Pre-WSDC 2026, our debaters impressed across every division, breaking into the Open Semifinals and Novice Semifinals, and collecting a rich haul of Overall, Novice, Under-15, and Under-13 speaker awards!
