Even at the C-suite level, growth doesn’t stop. It takes a different form.

As a Chief Operating Officer at Chun Sing Group, 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢 𝐋𝐚𝐰 (HKUST MBA Part-Time Weekly MBA Intake 2025) had already built a strong and progressing career. Responsibilities expanded, and outcomes remained strong. Yet she began to question whether she was still developing in new ways.

“𝑀𝑦 𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑟 𝑑𝑖𝑑𝑛’𝑡 𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑝 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔. 𝐼𝑡 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑎𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑚𝑒 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑤.”

That realisation stayed with her after attending an HKUST MBA Open House, where the concept of the “career curve” made it clear: 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲, 𝐢𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐬.

She decided to act before reaching that point.

Taking on the MBA wasn’t about adding more to her schedule, but about redefining it. As a COO, that meant stepping back from work routine and sharpening how she thinks, connecting decisions across functions, and approaching challenges with a broader, more structured perspective.

“𝐼𝑡’𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑏𝑎𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒. 𝐼𝑡’𝑠 𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑠𝑒.”

Outside classroom, Terri also plays an active role in shaping the cohort experience. As a member of class committee, she leads initiatives such as company visits, fireside chats and Global Network Week, where exposure to international peers broadened her perspective.

The impact is reflected in her day-to-day work:

“𝐼𝑡’𝑠 𝑛𝑜 𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑟 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤, 𝑏𝑢𝑡 ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑘, 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑑𝑒, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑑.”

Her advice is simple:

As 𝐌𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐊𝐰𝐨𝐤 (𝐇𝐊𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭-𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐌𝐁𝐀 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑) puts it, the MBA was “𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑎𝑛 𝑎𝑐𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑐 𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑎 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑡 𝑜𝑓 ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝐼 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑘 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒.”

Coming from a legal background — but already having worked closely with corporate clients, he found the program pushed him to integrate law with strategy, finance, negotiation, analytics and marketing. Building on the foundations of his legal and business knowledge, he began engaging with issues the way decision-makers do: balancing risk, return, timing and ex*****on.

Just as importantly, the experience sharpened skills that legal training does not always emphasize. Through constant group work, presentations, and case discussions, Mike developed greater clarity, persuasion, and adaptability. “𝐼 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑛𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑚𝑜𝑣𝑒 𝑏𝑒𝑦𝑜𝑛𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑎𝑙𝑦𝑧𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑢𝑒𝑠, 𝑡𝑜 𝑖𝑛𝑓𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑜𝑢𝑡𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑝𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑠𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠.”

The learning extended beyond the classroom. Through exchange opportunities at Peking University and the GNAM program in Istanbul, Mike gained exposure to different business environments — broadening how he interprets risk, context, and decision-making across markets.

Over time, that translated into something even more valuable: 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐭. Knowing when to push, when to compromise, and how to align legal advice with business objectives has become central to how he works today.

For Mike, the HKUST MBA did not simply broaden his knowledge. It elevated his judgment and perspective — positioning him ready for a near-term partnership role, where complex commercial matters will require not just legal precision, but the strategic command to lead at the intersection of law and business.

To mark the end of the journey, participants gathered for a pesto-making workshop hosted by 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠, a certified social enterprise. Framed around the idea of “𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝,” and embodying the “𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐝, 𝐍𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞, 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭” concept. The session reflected the journey in a simple, tangible way — planting the seed of ideas, nurturing relationships over time, and sharing what has been built together. What stands out is the mutual nature of the experience. It is not just guidance, but a continuing dialogue that often extends well beyond the program.

The next round of mentorship recruitment begins in August, welcoming alumni who want to stay engaged and give back.
