Computer Science and Engineering PhD student SHI Yuzhe was awarded a grant totaling RMB300,000 under the 2025 National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Young Student Basic Research Program. Established in 2023, the scheme supports early-career researchers in advancing innovative research. This year marks the first time the highly competitive program is open to Hong Kong.
Yuzhe is one of two awardees from the School of Engineering. He is supervised by Prof. QU Huamin, Dean of the Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies and Chair Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Students from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering achieved outstanding results at the 14th IMechE Greater China Design Competition. Supervised by Prof. Robin MA, Associate Professor of Engineering Education, and Dr. Stanley LEUNG, Teaching Associate, one of the two teams achieved First Runner-Up Award, while the other team placed fourth.
Organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Hong Kong Branch, the competition brought together over 120 participants, including industrial experts, academics, and students, from six leading institutions in the Greater Bay Area.

Civil Engineering PhD Student MA Yibo won a Best Student Presentation Award at the 29th Annual Conference of the Hong Kong Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (HKSTAM).
The winning presentation was on “Quantifying the Role of Thermoelectric Magnetohydrodynamic Process in Keyhole Pore Formation during Laser Powder Bed Fusion”. The research work was co-authored with his supervisor Prof. ZHAO Jidong, Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and former postdoctoral fellow Dr. YU Tao.

Prof. Andrew HORNER, Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Prof. Hnin Yin Yin NYEIN, Assistant Professor of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, from the School of Engineering were recognized at the HKUST Common Core Awards 2025. Prof. Horner was named the winner of the University wide Common Core Teaching Excellence Award, while Prof. Nyein is the Honorary Mention awardee.
In addition, three engineering students, CHEUNG Man-Ching, LAM Chak-Hin and WONG Cheuk-Hei, were among the recipients of the Common Core Student Recognition Award 2025, reflecting the School’s continued commitment to teaching excellence and student development.
