๐ฃ[HKU Civil Engineering Researchers Develop Novel Tracking Method to Reveal Spread of Antibiotic Resistance across Hong Kongโs Environment] ๐ฌ
The research team led by Professor Tong Zhang from HKUโs Department of Civil Engineering focused on Escherichia coli (E. coli), a common bacterium that can develop resistance to antibiotics, in Hong Kongโs urban waters, such as rivers and sewage. They tracked both bacterial strains and the small pieces of DNA, called plasmids, that carry resistance genes. This helped them understand how resistance can move between humans, animals, and the environment.๐งฌ๐ฆ

On 4 Dec, we took a deep dive into how metal 3D printing is transforming construction โopening doors to resilient, sustainable infrastructure for the future! ๐ฑ
๐กProfessor Leroy Gardner wowed us with groundbreaking research and real-world innovationsโlike the worldโs first fully functional 3D-printed metal bridgeโand shared an exciting roadmap ahead. We explored cutting-edge topics such as Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), material behaviour, structural performance, and hybrid construction techniques that boost strength while reducing embodied carbon. Case studies such as the MX3D Bridge in Amsterdam and the Weaving Love Pavilion in Hong Kong brought these concepts vividly to life! ๐
๐The session wrapped up with a dynamic panel discussion, where top scholars tackled challenges like corrosion resistance, fatigue performance, and the need for new design standardsโwhile spotlighting opportunities for collaboration and AI-driven optimisation. ๐
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us in advancing tech and sustainability in construction! ๐
Special thanks to the Department of Civil Engineering โฃ๏ธ
