This trio of stunning brooches by legendary designer JAR sold at Sotheby's for a combined $1.3M last month. Featuring natural pearls, each piece was designed as a wild rose, are sculptural studies of color, movement and botanical imagination.
All three pearls are natural saltwater pearls, confirmed by GIA Pearl Identification reports. Each brooch features different pavé-set gemstones, giving it a distinct personality:
- A button-shaped natural pearl centered among petals pavé-set with citrines and yellow sapphires
- A button-shaped natural pearl centered among petals pavé-set with amethysts and sapphires
- An ovoid natural pearl centered among petals pavé-set with pink and purple sapphires and garnets

is a durable gemstone, but proper care is still essential to maintain its brilliance and showcasing its beautiful color change.

- Clean gently: Use warm, soapy water and a soft brush, focusing behind the jewelry setting where oils and debris can build up and dull luster.

- Use caution with machines: Ultrasonic and steam cleaning are generally safe for alexandrites, but if the stone is heavily included or fracture-filled, stick to manual cleaning.

- Avoid harsh chemicals: While alexandrite is relatively stable, it’s still best to remove jewelry before using strong cleaners or swimming in chlorinated water, as harsh chemicals can damage metal settings.

- Store separately: Alexandrite can scratch softer gems like pearls, opals and emeralds—and be scratched by harder stones like sapphires, rubies and diamonds. Keep it in its own pouch or compartment.

The famous Tavernier Blue (the precursor to Louis XIV’s French Blue and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History's Hope Diamond) and the fictional Heart of the Ocean have made blue diamonds a source of fascination for centuries, capturing the popular imagination and shining as highlights in many record-breaking auctions. Principally colored by trace amounts of boron, they are some of the rarest and most desirable fancy color diamonds in the world.

Here are a few countries where the notable specimens have been found:
📍South Africa: The source of some of the largest diamonds in history, the Cullinan Mine in South Africa is also famous for producing coveted blue diamonds. Notable Fancy Vivid Blue examples include the Heart of Eternity (27.64-carat), the De Beers Cullinan Blue (15.10-carat) and the Blue Moon of Josephine (12.03-carat). In December 2025, Petra Diamonds recovered a 41.82-carat blue rough – only time will tell what exceptional blue will be fashioned from the crystal.

📍Botswana: The second largest producer of diamonds in the world, Botswana has yielded the 20.46-carat Fancy Deep Blue Okavango Blue Diamond.

📍India: Many historic diamonds trace their roots to India. The Farnese Blue (6.16-carat, Fancy Dark Grey-Blue) and the Hope Diamond (45.52-carat, Fancy Dark Grayish Blue) are thought to originate from the Indian Golconda region, possibly at the Kollur Mine. The Hope Diamond is specifically renowned for its French royal provenance and intense orange-red phosphorescence.

【GIA Timeless Beauty of Pearls 珍珠永恆之美】

This stunning pair of Van Cleef & Arpels natural pearl and diamond earrings stole the show at Heritage Auctions’ holiday auction, selling for $600,000—20 times the $30,000 pre-auction estimate!

Why is there a large difference between the estimate and the final sale price?
The pre-auction estimate was set before the pearls were identified as natural. "We had a gut feeling the pearls might be natural, so we sent them to GIA for professional pearl grading reports," says Jill Burgum, Executive Director of Fine Jewelry at Heritage Auctions, in their press release about the auction results. "We were thrilled with the results... but we never imagined they'd reach the final figure. Mind-boggling! And truly electric in the auction room."

Set in platinum with approximately 6.00 carats of diamonds and two natural pearl drops (16.36 and 17.88 carats), the earrings came with a GIA Portrait™ Report. This specialized report beautifully displays a wealth of information about a pearl in a hardbound portfolio.

"Most natural pearls are small, baroque in shape and worn or damaged due to their age. It is exceptionally rare to find a matching pair of large, natural saltwater pearls with ideal drop shapes," noted Chunhui Zhou, GIA's Senior Manager of Pearls. "The natural pearl earrings described in the GIA report are stunning examples of whole pearls, with nacreous surfaces that exhibit a soft luster and minimal surface blemishes."

GIA已簽署協議收購Tracr 30%的股份。 Tracr是一家由 De Beers支持的公司，致力於開發開創性的基於區塊鏈的鑽石溯源平台。De Beers自2018年起開始開發Tracr，並於2023年向更廣泛的鑽石產業開放，旨在實現從源頭到成品的全程溯源驗證。目前，已有超過500萬顆毛坯鑽石在Tracr上註冊。

GIA has signed an agreement to acquire a 30% shareholding in Tracr, the De Beers-backed company behind the development of the pioneering diamond provenance blockchain-driven platform. De Beers has been developing Tracr since 2018 and opened it to the broader diamond industry in 2023 to enable rough-to-polish verification that starts at the source. More than five million rough diamonds have been registered on Tracr.

Pritesh Patel, President and CEO of GIA, said, “As Tracr continues to scale globally, we see a tremendous opportunity to deliver meaningful, verifiable provenance information from the source to the consumer. We are proud to deepen our commitment through this investment and help shape the next evolution of transparency, traceability, and trust across our industry.”
