📖 就好像我們近期在《Ecological Informatics》發表的學術文章 “Mapping the past for the future: Spatial and temporal patterns and long-term trends of sea turtle strandings in Hong Kong and wider East Asian waters” (https://bit.ly/4usx3xV) 進一步指出了長期監測和數據的重要性。

🐢 Happy World Sea Turtle Day! 🌊✨
Sea turtles are among the ocean’s most remarkable travellers, and our team is proud to support their health and conservation through our collaboration with 漁農自然護理署 Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and 香港海洋公園 Ocean Park Hong Kong since 2019 🤝🩺 Using advanced diagnostic imaging and virtopsy, in conjunction with multidisciplinary assessment, we help investigate stranded sea turtles in Hong Kong and contribute to the knowledge needed for better wildlife care and marine conservation 🌏🔬
🗺️ One special case in our journey was Storm, a Green Sea Turtle with a remarkable history of rescue and rehabilitation. After recovery, it was tagged, microchipped, and later fitted with a satellite transmitter to reveal more about its post-release movements in local waters, through the efforts of AFCD and OPHK in 2020 and 2021 respectively 📡🐢
🩻 Unfortunately, Storm was later found dead in the northeast water of Hong Kong in 2023. After conducting virtopsy and necropsy, we found that Storm was in good nutritional condition, with no evidence of anthropogenic impact identified in its advanced state of decomposition. While the cause of death remained undetermined, our standardised virtopsy-led postmortem investigation helped assessed the turtle’s condition and contributed data that improve future rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation efforts. This individual’s story still left behind important scientific lessons 🧪📚, each case adds to a bigger picture of marine animal health and conservation in our local waters.
📖 Our recent publication in Ecological Informatics (Volume 95, May 2026, 103735), “Mapping the past for the future: Spatial and temporal patterns and long-term trends of sea turtle strandings in Hong Kong and wider East Asian waters” (https://bit.ly/4usx3xV) further highlights the value of long-term data in understanding strandings, their health conditions and threats they are facing, which strengthening conservation efforts across the region. 🗂️🌍
Each case helps deepen our understanding of sea turtle health in Hong Kong and reminds us why continued rescue, research, and conservation matter 💙🐢
On this World Sea Turtle Day, let’s celebrate these ancient mariners and work together to protect their future 🌊💚
🕵️ If you spot a stranded or injured sea turtle in Hong Kong, please call 1823 right away or contact us ASAP. You can also report injured or stranded animals instantly using the eSeaAnimal app (http://bit.ly/4ioicQz) — timely reports with accurate GPS info and photos help us respond quickly and save lives 📱🐬🐢

🌊 World Ocean Day: Every sighting and scan tells a story
At the CityUHK Aquatic Animal Virtopsy Lab, we’re dedicated to protecting marine life — both the living and the lost.
📸 For the Living: Just like human eHealth, we conduct visual health assessments on Hong Kong's free-ranging Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Chinese white dolphins). We monitor their well-being in the wild and track their health over time to better protect them.
🩻 From the Lost: When cetaceans and sea turtles strand, we use advanced, non-invasive imaging technique (virtopsy) to reveal their last meals, their battles with disease, or the devastating impacts of human activities — like vessel strike, ghost net entanglement, and plastic ingestion.
🌏 Our Mission: We don’t just find out how they died, we understand how they lived. By combining live health tracking with virtopsy findings, we get a more complete picture of marine megafauna today to shape a safer ocean tomorrow.
💙 This , we look forward to a future where science data actively drives marine policy. Let’s continue pushing the boundaries of veterinary medicine to safeguard our aquatic neighbours!
☀️ Stay tuned for more exciting updates coming up this summer!

💡New Publication Alert! We’re excited share our latest paper in Ecological Informatics (https://bit.ly/4tdb3GZ), which marks the first long-term assessment of sea turtle strandings in Hong Kong📝!
Since 2019, with permission from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), our team has been using virtopsy🩻 alongside conventional approaches to uncover the health conditions of sea turtles🐢. Combining this with AFCD’s substantial records in 2002–2024📊, we have gained deeper insights into these incredible animals.
As keystone species, sea turtles play a vital role in maintain seagrass meadows, coral reefs, and ocean nutrient cycles🪸. Hong Kong waters serve as an important migratory corridors and foraging grounds — particularly for juvenile green turtles🐢 which are most commonly seen in eastern and southern waters during spring and autumn. The study highlights increasing human pressures: fishery bycatch🎣, boat strike🚢, and marine pollution🤮 continue to threaten these ecological engineers.
Timely reporting is essential for their protection. If you spot a stranded, injured, or dead sea turtle in Hong Kong, please report it immediately to the Government hotline 1823 ☎️ or our team via the eSeaAnimals app📱(Android: https://bit.ly/4ioviNH ; iOS: https://bit.ly/4ioicQz). Every report contributes to citizen science and helps shape better conservation strategies.
We hope this paper becomes a strong foundation for sea turtle research and conservation across Hong Kong and East Asian waters💪🏼. A heartfelt thank you to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, the Environment and Conservation Fund, the Marine Conservation Enhancement Fund, the University Grants Committee and Ocean Park Hong Kong for their unwavering support and collaboration throughout this project❤️. Data into action — for a healthier ocean! 🐠🐬🌊
Coming up, we will be co-organizing some exciting activities with local partners in April — stay tuned 😎!

💔😢Heartbreaking update🐢: On 25 November 2025, AFCD received a call about a deceased green sea turtle floating in Sai Kung waters and rushed the body straight to our team on the same day. Within just a few hours our team finished both the virtopsy and the full necropsy, and what we found broke our hearts - we believed that this beautiful turtle got hopelessly tangled in fishing lines while it was eating. The lines pulled tight, stopping it from reaching the surface to breathe. We found undigested fish in its upper gastrointestinal tract and massive internal bleeding - it literally drowned in the middle of its last meal 💔🌊.
This incident highlights the deadly impact of human activities on aquatic wildlife. Globally, around 250,000 sea turtles🐢drown or suffer fatal injuries after being accidentally caught in nets or on hooks every year. Around 300,000 cetaceans🐬 (whales, dolphins and porpoises) die from entanglement or vessel strikes linked to fishing operations. These deaths are not inevitable. Let’s honour them by acting now!
1. Reduce Plastic Waste 🗑️🧹: Opt for reusable bags and bottles. Join beach cleanups to remove marine debris. Every piece of plastic or abandoned fishing gear you pick up is one less threat of entanglement or ingestion!
2. Support Sustainable Seafood 🐟❤️: Small daily choices in Hong Kong’s incredibly seafood-loving culture add up fast. If every household switched just one high-bycatch dish a week, we could cut thousands of bycatch every year!
3. Dispose of Fishing Gear Responsibly: If you’re a fisher, NEVER discard old fishing lines at sea or on shore! Switch to biodegradable monofilament and report lost gear — ghost gear keeps killing long after it is lost!
4. Report Injured or Stranded Animals Instantly: Many bycatch victims are released alive but badly injured. If you see a turtle or dolphin with fresh cuts, hooked mouth, or trailing gear, every minute matters! Call the HKSAR government hotline 1823 or use our eSeaAnimal mobile app 📲🆘 — timely reporting with accurate GPS info and photos helps us respond quick and save lives!
