Why draw in black & white first before adding color?

1. Values = the structure of your painting
Black, white, and all the grays in between are called "values". Values tell us what’s light, what’s shadow, and what’s in-between.
If your values are wrong, no amount of pretty color can save it.

2. Your brain gets less distracted
Black & white forces you to focus only on shape, light, and shadow. No distractions. You solve the big problems first.

3. Easier to fix mistakes
In art class we call this "working from general to specific". Get the big light/dark shapes right first, then add details and color later.

4. It trains your eye like a pro
Old Masters did this too. They made "grisaille" studies, full paintings in gray before adding colors.
Once you can make something look 3D with just black, white, and gray, adding color becomes easy.

Simple rule
Value first, color second.
If it reads well in black & white, it will read well in color.
If it doesn’t read in black & white, color won’t fix it.

Remember!
"Value does the work, color gets the credit"

In classical art training, “paint the light and dark, not the object” means you train your eye to see value before identity.

We don’t actually see objects .W see how light defines them. A sphere isn’t a circle with a line around it. It’s a gradation from highlight to midtone to core shadow to reflected light. Your brain reads that pattern of values and says “sphere.”

So as a teacher, we tell students to stop labeling: Don’t think “apple,” “nose,” or “tree.” Instead, squint and ask: Where is the lightest light? Where is the darkest dark?

When you get the relationships of light and dark correct, the object appears automatically. You didn’t paint the object. You painted the conditions that make us perceive it.

There are times we’re serious and focused on the task.
There are times we're silly and let joy unmask.

Zoe asked if she needed to tone the canvas. I said it wasn't necessary for this painting. And because she understands colors and values well, she can break the rules sometimes.

What is toning a canvas?
Aplying a thin wash of color over the white canvas before you start

Why it matters?

1. Kills the “white intimidation”
Staring at a blank white canvas makes artists freeze. A mid-tone ground is way less aggressive. You’re no longer making the “first mark” on pure white .

2. Reads value better
On white, every dark looks too dark and every light looks too light. Your brain gets tricked. On a mid-tone, you can judge values accurately from the start. Makes highlights and shadows read correctly right away. This is also the reason students should use neutral gray/ brown palette for mixing their paint accurately.

3. Brings together the painting
Tiny gaps between brushstrokes happen. If the canvas is white, those gaps seem “unfinished.” If it’s toned, the gaps become part of the harmony.

5. Saves time and paint
Mid-tones already sit in the middle of your value range, so building up lights and darks takes less work.

Painting on white canvas is like trying to tune a guitar in a silent room. Every tiny mistake is loud. Toning is like adding background noise. Suddenly your marks just fit.

Zoe tanya apakah dia perlu toning kanvas.

1.. Menghilangkan rasa “takut kanvas putih”
Menatap kanvas putih kosong bikin seringkali membuat kita diam mematung.

Irene's rapid progress in anime drawing because she had already developed a strong foundation in the fundamentals of art ( she didn't learn to draw characters). Instead of simply learning to copy objects or apply color, she had gained a deep understanding of core drawing principles and color theory. This foundational knowledge enabled her to adapt to new styles with ease.

*One Monday in class… chaos, color, and creativity:*

Kaishaka went full wild-mode and turned a boring monster into a rainbow menace.

Shareen squinted at a penguin and went, “Wait… is that a bunny?”

Angel was excited, giving a long talk about the paper airplane she built at school.

Irene? Still in her anime universe. We didn’t even try to pull her out.

Nicole casually dropped science: “Blood flow in your face literally decides your skin tone. ”

Joyce showed up all sunshine and energy… then took a legendary 5-minute power nap.

Shareen, again, looked at a raccoon and bravely concluded: “Yep. That’s a raccoon.” Groundbreaking.

Ben rolled in with only red and yellow like he was sponsored by ketchup & mustard. Nicole saved him with her blue — and boom, we accidentally painted like Bob Ross. Happy little trees included.
