Pelita Kids learning to recognize and read letters in our basic literacy class
Since covid 19 pandemic in 2020, one of our focus programs is literacy class.
Why is literacy?
1) Based on data from the “Indonesia Reading Literacy Activity Index”, West Nusa Tenggara Province is one of the three provinces with the lowest Proficiency Dimension Index
(https://www.lpwntb.or.id/ntb-krisis-literasi/)
2) We meet some kids who still find difficulty to read and count in elementary and secondary level. Also, based on information from some teachers and NGOs in some remote areas in south Lombok, they are facing many of their students/ supported kids are find difficulty in reading and counting
3) During the pandemic, offline classrooms in formal schools stopped. They are switching to online classrooms, teacher's home visits, or shifting classroom activity where students only do join offline classroom for 2-3 hours per day. Online classroom is fine for those kids who live in the city with good access to the internet, but will be a big problem for those who live in remote areas such as
- difficulty internet access;
- parents do not have enough knowledge and time to assist the learning process;
- they do not have proper/ comfy place to learn (houses are small and crowded).
The limited time of offline learning aggravates difficulty for remote area kids to read and count, because they do not have enough books to practice and teachers to guide.
Thus, Pelita Foundation initiates to run literacy classes from Monday to Thursday which divided into two levels:
-Basic literacy for those who still find difficulty in reading and counting
- Medium literacy for those who already able to read and count where we will help them develop their reading comprehension, simple writing, and speaking through story telling.
If you wanna hold their hands to their bright future, you can be their "lighter" for their starting path by giving donation start from $ 5/ month or Rp. 50.000,- by clicking our donation link below:

🧐Sneak peak for our new project for schools 🧐
In the middle of 2018, Lombok was struck by devastating earthquake up to 7 magnitude.
Even though it still leaves trauma to people in this island especially in north lombok, but, they can move on and do recovery quicker.
However, till 2021, there are still many schools which buildings are collapse or severely damage do not receive permanent building form government. Some of them are still rely on emergency buildings or tents to carry out learning activities.
They state that it is because sometimes the disbursement of rehabilitation funds from the government requires time and a long bureaucracy, while support from private sectors are not enough to encompass all of those damage schools.
Supported by our partner and Government of West Nusa Tenggara which previously also support pelita for pop up school project (temporary school building in 2018-2020), we will do re-construction of permanent building for those schools, but using plastic block/eco brick.
The foundation for our first school is in progress done by qualified local construction company, while our eco brick from Finland will arrive in hours to Lombok.
Do you wanna know why, what, and how is our "plastic block schools"?
Just keep you updated with our posts 😉

Drawing and coloring are the most favorite activities in our class
We use those methods in all of our classes because they have many functions:
1) helps them to be more expressive
Children can’t always express themselves using words and actions, so drawing is another important form of communication. You can gain an insight into their thoughts and feelings through their drawings. Being able to express what they feel also boosts a child’s emotional intelligence.
2) enhances their motoric skills
From a small scribble to a masterpiece that takes pride of place on the fridge, drawing can enhance your their motor skills from a young age. Starting them as early as possible will help them improve their hand and eye coordination, while fine-tuning their finger muscles.
3) Develops their problem solving skills
When drawing, a child is faced with multiple decisions- whether it’s ‘what colour should I use here?’ or ‘How do I draw a animal and connect one part of its body to another?’ All these questions require them to solve problems.
4)Stimulate their imagination
Drawing enables their imagination to become more active. Each time they draw they access their imagination and make physical representations of what’s in their mind.

Our children back to the literacy class after long weekend of eid mubarak.
They are so happy to read books and do story telling to their friends about what they read.
During covid 19 pandemic where public schools in rural and remote areas just open the class for 1-2 hours per day, various learning community centers and activities are very helpful for children.
Pelita Lombok Foundation provides library and various classes activities for children to support their learning. Not only English classes, or various crafting activities, but our teachers also help children to learn their major subjects of public schools

This week we have been working with the local community to set up hand- and bike-sanitation stations for people entering Gerupuk village, and to put up information posters about preventing and recognising COVID-19 symptoms. Stay safe (and stay home) everyone! 🙏😷
28/03/2020
Today Gerupuk’s Corona Task Force were briefed, and the information was well received. The 10 members were supplied with: a CHECKLIST of the key things to know and do; INFORMATION POSTERS about prevention, symptoms and what to do if someone has symptoms; and NECK TAGS with the phone numbers for the COVID-19 emergency service and other important numbers.
Members also discussed village policies regarding visitors to the village, restaurants and businesses, etc.
We hope to stock more basic protective materials, and to support the local clinics as much as possible. Please donate a small amount if you can! Details and updates at https://fundrazr.com/61ddb9?ref=ab_d2U1O2
