Why Oceans 5 Gili Air Might Be the Best Dive Shop in Indonesia
And Why Most Divers Don’t Notice the Difference Until It’s Too Late
When people search for the best dive shop in Indonesia, they often compare prices, look at a few photos, check online reviews, and make a decision. But what if the most important differences are the things you can’t immediately see?
What if the real difference between a good dive center and an exceptional one lies behind the scenes — in the training of the staff, the professionalism of the operation, the adherence to standards, and the philosophy of education?
That is exactly where Oceans 5 Gili Air stands apart.

Today I had the honor of welcoming Getreda Melsina Hehanussa, the Head of Balai Pengelolaan Kelautan Denpasar, to Oceans 5 Gili Air.
During our meeting, we discussed the current situation in the Gili Matra Marine Park and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for this unique marine ecosystem.
Protecting our reefs, marine life, and local communities requires collaboration between government agencies, local businesses, conservation organizations, and the people who call these islands home. We share a common vision: ensuring that Gili Matra remains a healthy and thriving marine park for future generations.
Together, we will continue working towards a sustainable future for Gili Matra through conservation, education, responsible tourism, and community engagement.
Thank you for your visit and for the constructive discussions. We look forward to strengthening this partnership and making a positive impact on our marine environment.

WHY ARE RECREATIONAL DIVERS STOPPED AT 40 METERS?
WHAT’S REALLY HIDING BELOW?
Have you ever looked down into the blue during a dive and wondered what lies beyond the recreational limits? Maybe you have been diving around the Gili Islands and noticed a wall disappearing into the darkness. Maybe you have heard stories about deep wrecks, rare marine life, or experienced divers exploring depths far below what most recreational divers ever see.
So why are recreational divers limited to 40 meters? Is it just a rule made by dive organizations, or is there a real reason behind it?
The answer might surprise you.

Scuba Diving Has Never Been This Cheap in Indonesia!
The Secret Most Travelers Haven’t Noticed Yet
Planning a trip to Asia this year? Thinking about visiting Indonesia? Then there’s something happening right now that many travelers haven’t fully realized yet: scuba diving in Indonesia has become more affordable than ever for foreign visitors.
While airlines are opening new routes to Indonesia and more travelers are discovering destinations beyond Bali, another factor is making holidays even more attractive. The Indonesian Rupiah has been under pressure against many international currencies, meaning that visitors from Europe, Australia, North America, and other parts of the world are finding that their money goes further than it did just a few years ago.
And when your money stretches further, activities that once felt expensive suddenly become surprisingly affordable.
Including scuba diving.

YOU’RE MISSING 70% OF THE PLANET… UNTIL YOU LEARN TO SCUBA DIVE
Imagine spending your entire life exploring only one-third of the world.
Sounds crazy, right?
Yet that is exactly what most people do.
More than 70% of our planet is covered by water, but the vast majority of people never experience what lies beneath the surface. They see photographs of colorful coral reefs, watch documentaries about sea turtles and sharks, and scroll through social media videos of divers floating effortlessly through crystal-clear blue water. But they never actually enter that world themselves.
The truth is simple: if you have never been scuba diving, you are missing one of the greatest adventures available on Earth.
And there may be no better place to discover that underwater world than Gili Air, Indonesia.

WHY TECH DIVERS ARE SUDDENLY TALKING ABOUT GILI AIR
The Secret World Below 40 Meters
For years, the Gili Islands were known as a tropical paradise for beginner divers, turtle encounters, warm blue water, and relaxing drift dives. Thousands of divers travel every year to the Gili Islands to complete their first scuba certification, enjoy colorful coral reefs, or simply escape busy life on land.
But something is changing beneath the surface around Gili Air.
A new generation of divers is arriving with twin tanks, stage cylinders, long hoses, decompression software, and an obsession with exploring deeper, longer, and more challenging underwater environments. Technical diving — often called “Tech Diving” — is no longer reserved for elite cave explorers or expedition divers in remote parts of the world.
And surprisingly, one of the emerging locations for technical diving in Indonesia is now the tiny island of Gili Air.
Even more surprising?
Oceans 5 Gili Air is currently the only TDI Dive Center on Gili Air.
That single fact is changing the diving landscape around the island.

Another amazing chapter comes to an end at Oceans 5 Gili Air 🌊🇮🇩
Our internship program for Indonesian university students is almost finished, and we couldn’t be more proud of what these students achieved over the past months. What started with research, conservation work, and gaining experience around the Gili Islands has now grown into real diving careers and new opportunities underwater.
4 students are now continuing their adventure with the SSI Advanced Open Water Course 🤿
One student is even taking the next big step and becoming an SSI Rescue Diver 💪
…and we almost forgot one very special story: one of the students is joining the SSI Instructor Training Course and starting the journey to become a professional dive instructor! 🔥
This is exactly why we started this internship program together with Indonesian universities: creating opportunities, sharing knowledge, building confidence, and helping local students grow within the marine and diving industry.
A huge thank you to all students for their hard work, motivation, research, and positive energy during the internship. You became part of the Oceans 5 family ❤️
The next batch of university students will arrive in September, and hopefully we will welcome 12 new students for another incredible internship program around the Gili Islands 🌴🐠
The future of marine conservation and diving in Indonesia looks bright! 🇮🇩🌊

SNORKELING LOOKS AMAZING…
UNTIL YOU DISCOVER WHAT YOU’VE BEEN MISSING UNDERWATER
For many travelers visiting the Gili Islands, snorkeling feels like the perfect tropical activity. Crystal-clear water, turtles swimming near the surface, colorful coral reefs only meters from the beach, and warm ocean temperatures all year round. It is easy, affordable, and accessible for almost everyone.
But there is one thing many people say after trying scuba diving for the very first time:
“I wish I had done this earlier.”
Because even though snorkeling shows you the surface of the underwater world, scuba diving completely changes the way you experience the ocean.
At Oceans 5 Gili Air on Gili Air, thousands of people started as snorkelers before discovering scuba diving around the Gili Islands. And once they took their first breaths underwater, they realized there is an enormous difference between looking at the ocean and actually becoming part of it.
