NSF artist Sophie Longwill is currently working on Continuum, a Per Cent for Art Commission for Munster Technological University. Made from stainless steel and hundreds of flame-formed botanical elements, this 7-metre artwork will be her largest scale piece to date.
Continuum will be installed in the Le Chéile building on MTU’S Bishopstown campus in June 2026.
"Each piece of glass embodies a singular moment, and together they speak to the flow of countless instants that shape our lived reality- especially those experienced in this particular time and place. I am drawn to working with multiple components in this way to remind us of the effect and potential of many individuals coming together in community- a theme in keeping with the ethos of MTU and especially the environment of togetherness in the Le Chéile building. The artwork will hold the energy of the hours of intense focused labour needed to sculpt the components. This then becomes metamorphosed into a sense of serenity which resonates from the work. Thus, the process becomes a meditation on time, labour, and transformation."

In this one-day workshop, we will explore the ancient Bronze Age techniques of chasing and repoussé. The term chasing is derived from the French word chasse, meaning a groove, furrow, channel, or indentation. A design is applied to the metal by first using carbon paper to transfer the pattern onto the surface, then using a scribe to etch in the design. The metal is then set into pitch and worked on from both sides using a selection of punches and a repoussé hammer until the desired effect is achieved.
All materials and equipment are supplied.
