The biggest misconception about sports coaching and PE? That it is only about the physical side of sport.

As Anthony Sheriff, Programme Lead for Sports Coaching and PE at Portobello Institute, explains, this pathway develops much more than technical ability. It builds confidence, communication, leadership, decision-making and the mindset needed to support others in sport, education and physical activity.

For students looking to start, change or progress in a sport-focused career, there is more than one route to becoming a professional. With flexible learning, guidance and career-focused study, Portobello supports learners as they build the skills and confidence to take that next step.

From the classroom to placement, the physiotherapy journey starts to take shape early.

For Sean Coughlan, the experience so far has been defined by practical learning, personalised guidance, and the people around him.

From smaller class sizes to guidance that meets students where they are, Sean speaks about what has helped him settle into the MSc Physiotherapy (Pre-registration) and build confidence as he works towards becoming a physiotherapist.

Now having completed his first placement, he is beginning to see how the learning connects with real clinical practice and what that means for the kind of physiotherapist he is working to become.

For graduates looking for a route into physiotherapy, Sean’s experience gives a real sense of the learning, guidance and placement experience that shape the first steps towards practice.

Placement is where classroom learning starts to become professional confidence. 👏

For Sports Therapy student Nadine Clare, placement will be an opportunity to build practical skills, gain confidence and apply her learning in a real sporting environment.

Nadine will complete her placement with Peamount United, her own club, working with the U17 girls team. This experience will give her hands-on insight into supporting players, learning in practice and taking another step towards her future career in sports therapy.

At Portobello Institute, studying sports therapy is about more than gaining a qualification. It is about building confidence, developing professional skills and understanding where your pathway in sport can lead.
