Claíomh, meaning 'sword' in Irish, is a professional 'living history' group portraying late medieval and early modern military life in Ireland to a museum-quality standard. Composed of like-minded individuals, the group is continually working on a wide range of reconstructive projects. Dublin's late medieval militia was drawn from two distinct middle class categories: (1) merchants within the city walls and (2) craft trained apprentices who had graduated to ‘freemen’.

From autumn 1454 both groups were required to maintain bow, arrows and sword for the city's defence. Merchants were further ordered to own a 'sallet' helmet. This panoply was inspected twice a year at assembies by their respective guild masters.

OTD Battle of Clontibret 27th May 1595 when the Irish under Hugh O'Neill defeated the English commanded by the Queen's Marshall Sir Henry Bagenal.

'That in no place wheresoever he had served in all his life he never saw more readier or perfecter shotte than the Irish'. This latter was the observation of Sir Edward York who was in command of the English cavalry.
