After the recent record breaking heat across Ireland, many families may be dealing with sore, red or sunburnt skin.
Sunburn can happen quickly, even here in Ireland, and UV can still damage skin on cloudy days.
If your child has already been sunburnt, the HSE recommends:
💧 Get them out of the sun as soon as possible
🚿 Cool the skin with a cool shower, bath or damp towel
🧴 Apply aftersun or aloe vera
🥤 Encourage them to drink plenty of water
🌤️ Keep sunburnt skin covered and out of direct sunlight until it has healed
The HSE also says not to put ice directly on sunburn, not to pop blisters, and not to scratch or peel the skin.
𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽
Contact your GP if your child has blisters or swelling, feels very tired, dizzy or sick, has a very high temperature, or has a headache and muscle cramps.
The HSE also says parents should contact a GP if a baby or young child has sunburn.
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗻𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗻
The HSE SunSmart message is simple:
👕 Slip on clothes that cover skin
🧴 Slop on sunscreen, SPF 50 plus for children
👒 Slap on a wide brimmed hat
🌳 Seek shade, especially between 11am and 3pm
🕶️ Slide on sunglasses with UV protection
Sunscreen should be applied around 20 minutes before going outside and reapplied every 2 hours, and after swimming or outdoor play.
You can also check the UV Index on Met Éireann. If the UV Index is 3 or above, skin protection is needed.

The move from preschool to primary school is one of the most significant milestones in a child’s early years, for children and parents alike.
Children don’t arrive at primary school as blank slates. They bring with them the learning, confidence, relationships and skills they’ve already developed through their Early Years experience. This transition is about building on those strong foundations, not starting from scratch.
To support parents and childcare providers during this important time, the 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 ( #𝗡𝗣𝗖) is offering 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 during the week of 𝟭𝟱 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.

Community involvement plays an important role in enriching children’s learning experiences. We were delighted to welcome Michelle from Ballymoe who generously shared her skills and passion for yoga with our preschool children. Through a range of fun, age-appropriate yoga activities, the children explored different movements, stretches, and relaxation techniques while developing their balance, coordination, and body awareness. The session also encouraged mindfulness, confidence, and positive wellbeing in a supportive environment. Opportunities such as these help strengthen the partnership between home and preschool, allowing children to learn from the talents and experiences within their own community while fostering a sense of belonging and connection
