We were honoured to join the Irish Environmental Network delegation last week to meet the European Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy, Jessika Roswall, on a range of topics.
We were able to share our views on the upcoming Circular Economy Act, calling for more ambition for refill, reuse and repair.
We have seen the power of policy ambition in Ireland, with our own Circular Economy Act, supported by policy, underpinning reuse and waste prevention targets and the creation of a circular economy fund. We have also seen through our community engagement programmes, including Circular.ie, how communities are bringing reuse and repair to villages and towns across the country.
Thank you to the Irish Environmental Network and the European Commission Representation in Ireland for this opportunity, and especially to Commissioner Roswall for taking the time to engage with civil society.

Ever wondered what it’s like to work in one of our reuse workshops? Well, here’s your chance! Peek behind the scenes this week to see what it’s like to work in the Paint Team.
In 2024, Ireland created 5,441 tonnes of paint related waste! We think that’s crazy, and we’re here to save good quality paint from being wasted, and make sure it’s used to help brighten communities around Ireland.

You may have heard of French polishing, but what exactly is it?
From 18th-century France, French polishing is a beautifully timeless technique for bringing life back into your wooden furniture.
Thin layers of shellac are carefully applied to your piece, creating a glossy, mirror-like finish that highlights the beautiful features of the wood. Build your layers until you achieve your desired shine - French polishing requires patience and practice, it’s an art form!
Fun fact: Shellac is a resin created by female lac bugs in the forests of India and Thailand!
Though mass production has nearly erased this art, we’re here to make sure skills aren’t lost.
If you’re ready to revive your wooden treasures, join Jay and Jo for a class.

Ready to dive into the world of circular living? Tune in today at 12:30pm to 103.2 Dublin City FM for the Rediscovery Centre’s monthly circular economy takeover on the Green Room.
This episode features Jo and Jay of The Dublin Polishers , master crafters championing reuse and repair right here in Dublin!
We chat about Jo and Jay’s history, how the Dublin Polishers came to be, what French Polishing is, and the importance of maintaining important historic crafts like this.
A big theme we discuss is overcoming the fear of starting a restoration project, Jay and Jo’s advice is, “just give it a go!” Old furniture pieces are worth saving, and if you make mistakes they can be rectified.
