The Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS) organized a farewell programme in honour of Prof. Pravakar Rath, who has served the department with great dedication and distinction. The programme was held at the Dean SEMIS Conference Hall and was chaired by the Head of the Department, Prof. Manoj Kumar Verma.

The programme began with a farewell address delivered by Prof. Manoj Kumar Verma, who highlighted the many initiatives undertaken by Prof. Pravakar Rath for the growth and development of the department. He acknowledged his immense contributions and dedicated service to the academic and professional advancement of Library and Information Science.

Prof. R.K. Ngurthinkhuma (Retd.) shared his memories as one of Prof. Rath’s first Ph.D. scholars. He spoke about Prof. Rath’s exceptional administrative abilities and his remarkable contributions through organizing seminars, workshops, and conferences that greatly benefited library professionals and students alike.

Dr. Lalngaizuali also spoke warmly about Prof. Rath’s understanding nature, excellent management skills, and the many good practices he introduced in the department. Dr. F. Chanchinmawia highlighted his valuable contributions and invited him to remain connected with the department in the future.

Dr. Manendra Kumar Singh shared his experiences of working with Prof. Rath and described him as a man who always stood by his words and principles. Dr. Ruth Lalthlamuanpuii appreciated his unique teaching style and expressed admiration for his decision to continue serving in Mizoram until his retirement.

Dr. Divyanshu Gupta spoke about Prof. Rath’s kindness, professional skills, and wished him success and happiness in the years ahead. Dr. Lallawmawmi appreciated his diplomacy and the professional manner in which he handled various situations, while also wishing him the very best in the next chapter of his life. Dr. Vanlalneia highlighted Prof. Rath’s work culture and teaching techniques, describing them as an inspiration and challenge for others to uphold in the future.

On behalf of the research scholars, Miss Anudha Lepcha delivered a heartfelt farewell message, expressing how fortunate the scholars were to have attended his lectures and learned under his guidance. Representing the 4th Semester students, Jorgina Lalrinmawii stated that Prof. Rath would always remain at the heart of DLIS, MZU because of his immense contribution as a teacher and mentor. Rosalynd Lallawmsangi, representing the 2nd Semester students, conveyed their gratitude for having him as their teacher and concluded with warm wishes for his future.

The session was followed by felicitation from the department faculty, research scholars, postgraduate students, and others who wished to honour Prof. Rath.

Dr. Moorttimatee Samantaray, wife of Prof. Pravakar Rath, shared the challenges they faced when Prof. Rath first joined Mizoram University and reflected on his professional journey. She also mentioned several important initiatives he had undertaken during his tenure at IGNOU.

In his farewell speech, Prof. Pravakar Rath reflected on his journey at Mizoram University and spoke about his advocacy for the upliftment of Library and Information Science in Mizoram. He shared insights into his working style and administrative experiences. During the programme, he also presented the recently published book titled Reimagining LIS in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Innovation, Systems and Services (A Festschrift in Honour of Prof. Pravakar Rath)..

The department is honored to have Prof. MP Satija, UGC Emeritus Fellow, GND Univerity Amritsar, one of the most renowned experts in the field of knowledge organization in the Country. He generously shared his deep knowledge and practical skills, enriching MLIS students' understanding of knowledge organization theory and practical.

The inaugural session of the three-day national workshop on *“Emerging Trends in Knowledge Organization: Principles and Practice”* was successfully held on 18 May 2026 at Mizoram University. The workshop was organized by the Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS), MZU.

The programme commenced with a melodious song presented by the 4th Semester MLIS students, followed by a warm welcome address delivered by Prof. Manoj Kumar Verma.

Prof. Vanlalchhawna, Dean of the School of Economics, Management and Information Science (SEMIS), MZU, delivered the Dean’s address. The resource person, Prof. M.P. Satija, shared valuable insights on the theme of the workshop.

The inaugural address was delivered by the Honourable Vice Chancellor of MZU, Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka, who emphasized the significance of the workshop in strengthening and advancing knowledge organization practices in the region.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. F. Chanchinmawia, who expressed sincere gratitude to all the dignitaries, participants, and organizers for their support and contribution to the successful conduct of the programme.

The department congratulates Mr Lalremsiama and Miss Vanlalfeli for successfully defending their Ph.D. research works entitled “Application of Social Media Tools in Central Universities Libraries in North East India” and “A Study of Users’ Engagement Practices in Young Mizo Association Libraries in Aizawl District, Mizoram” respectively, in the esteemed presence of Prof Udayan Bhattacharya and Prof S. Ravi as external examiners along with the Dean, SEMIS, Head of the Department, faculty members, and research scholars of the department.

Lalremsiama has completed his Ph.D. work under the supervision of Prof Pravakar Rath, while Vanlalfeli has completed her Ph.D. work under the supervision of Prof Pravakar Rath and joint supervision Dr Amit Kumar. Both the scholars successfully addressed all the queries raised by the experts during the viva voce examination.

The department wishes both the scholars all success and a bright future in their academic and professional endeavours.

The Department of Library and Information Science, Mizoram University is pleased to announce a Three-Day National Workshop on "Emerging Trends in Knowledge Organization: Principles and Practice" from 18th-20th May, 2026. This workshop is designed for library professionals who wish to sharpen their knowledge and stay updated with the latest developments in the field. Interested professionals are welcome to attend and learn from this workshop. Please note that only 40 seats are available, registration will be strictly on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Department of Library and Information Science, Mizoram University, successfully organized workshop on "Use of AI in Research: Tools and Techniques" at the Dean's SEMIS Hall on 23rd April 2026. Around 80 participants from various institutions attended, reflecting strong academic interest in AI's evolving role in research.

The workshop featured two distinguished resource persons: Prof. Manoj Kumar Sinha (Assam University, Silchar) and Prof. Rupak Chakraborty (Panjab University, Chandigarh). The event was inaugurated by Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of Mizoram University.

Prof. Manoj Kumar Verma, Head of the Department and Workshop Director, delivered the welcome address, outlining the workshop's objectives and emphasizing AI's growing importance in academia. Prof. Vanlalchhawna, Dean of SEMIS, also addressed the gathering. Prof. Sinha highlighted the ethical use of AI tools in academic writing and research.

The inaugural session ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Ruth Lalthlamuanpuii, Assistant Professor and Workshop Convener. The program was divided into two sessions, offering both theoretical insights and hands-on practical training in AI-enabled research tools.
