Being productive keeps your dopaminergic system activated which is the incentive reward circuit (Yes, apparently there’s a whole circuit for it) When we feel we are not contributing much we tend to denigrate our own selves (as physiologically, the dopaminergic system seems inactive) but that is bad because that initiates a negative feedback loop.

The best course then is to forget the past and start afresh like writing on a new blank page. I.e to become empty again. Something curiously similar to what Buddha was talking about.
