As Sangeet Sadhana, we celebrate arguably one of the biggest names in music, the legendary Manna De ji. There are no words that truly do justice to his voice. From mesmerizing melodies, determination, discipline to camaraderie and moulding oneself, this is one artist who has been the perfect example of being an artist who cut down the stereotype that classical music needed to be done in a particular mood or setup.
His rendition of "Kaun aaya mere mann ke dware" based on raag Rageshri alongside the magical Bengali classic "Obhimane chole jeo na" based on the same raag demonstrated his control over both Sur and bhav to pitch perfection. If raag based songs were iconic, so was his ability to compose music! His dexterity in composing music can be understood by the sheer wizardry he shows in Nathli se toota in the rarest of raagas, Maanj Khamaj.
His versatility in languages, his divine talent in commanding swaras, his ability to assimilate and absorb influences as one sees in the song "Aye mere pyare watan" where he brings the Afghan touch in the vibrato he creates which totally aligns with the character on screen is something that makes Manna De truly iconic.
On his 105th birth anniversary today, Sangeet Sadhana offers its heartfelt tributeππππππ

We are delighted to bring you our live performance. Please keep an eye on the time and support our students π
The real magic happens behind closed doors, without any applause and without any expectation of failure or success. As we take you to a sneak peek behind those closed doors, we catch a moment when two of our extremely talented musicians practice for a private baithak in their nascent yet candid moment.
Watch as our tabla guru Shri Ashwiniji pushes senior vocal student Shibananda Mishra as he increases the tempo from a dhrut to an atidhrut laya in the fascinating tarana. This is one of the innumerable times when these two have practiced without any slacking in their enthusiasm or energy and it is this relentless pursuit that makes the difference!
Could anyone take a guess as to which song has this beautiful tarana within itself and what could be the taal being played? Bring it on!

Behind the ability of raagas to conjure images of dawn or dusk, sadness and melancholy or joy and gaiety lies the sound foundation of years and years of evolution of Indian Classical music.
In a study conducted and paper presented in the erudite science journal "Nature", the author has mentioned how the frequencies of the swaras evoke feelings as described in the rasas of fear, joy, romance, happiness, karuna and deep sadness all by the correct positioning of the swaras, how by tweaking a few notes from the adi raag Bhairav, one can generate feelings of eerieness in Raag Paraj merely by introducing teevra Madhyam or the sadness of Lalit or the valour of Marwa or the melancholy of Puriya dhanashri or even the mixed bag of emotions; Bhairavi.
These raagas are distinct in their flavours and often challenging as they indicate transitions and migration from one episode of life to the next, from day to night and thus produce melodic masterpieces..

The singer who conjured magic with swaras, one of the last of the exponents of the famous Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, Padmasri Ustad Rashid Khan is one who effortlessly bridged the chasm of popular music and pure classical music, this is the voice that evoked oceans of emotions..on a day like today, his silence engulfs the soundscape..Ustad ji, may you rest in melody..forever..
Sangeet Sadhana offers its shatakoti pronaam...
Introducing the Sadabahar raag, Bhairavi. The magic of all komal swaras spreads its wings on the canvas of melodic masterpieces. The "Asnraye" raag of the Bhairavi thaat, this is the raaga that is often sung as the last piece of a concert thereby not only showcasing the dexterity and the expertise of the singer but also letting the melody linger on in the minds of the audience even after performances are over.
We at Sangeet Sadhana try to let our absolute beginners take in a sip of this majestic Ragini in its absolute catchy avatar by simply presenting the swarlipi of an iconic semiclassical composition by the legend, Manna De!
A lifetime of Sadhana is needed to understand music but for those students who come to Bangalore's premier music academy, it is our duty and privilege to let them inside the absolute wonderbox of Hindustani shastriya Sangeet!

Classical music classes are not only about great taans and elaborate theatrics, sometimes classical music is a soft, pure, surrender to the Almighty! A bhajan dedicated to Goddess Durga is one that is a perfect coming together of swaras, taal and emotion! Let us know in the comments if you can identify the raaga and the taal that make this bhajan an iconic one!!!
