👩🏻⚕️ Globally, women in disciplines — science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — face several structural and societal barriers preventing them from progressing in their respective fields.
They receive smaller research grants than their male colleagues; have shorter, less well-paid careers; and are less likely to have their work published in high-profile scientific journals. Their representation in cutting-edge research fields is also dismally low, as is their inclusion in fields of tech innovation.
The aims to highlight this disparity and the factors causing this gap, with the goal of reducing the gender gap in STEM disciplines.
The theme for this year is “Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Water Unites Us”, which recognizes women not just as beneficiaries, but also as agents of change, in accelerating progress toward the goal of ensuring access to clean and for all by 2030.
