Vartika Arora of 11C of our school is a part of IIT Delhi’s multi-phase program for high school students,a 6-month initiative consisting of four different phases of research and development where students from across India collaborate to solve real-world problems. Recently, she attended Phase 2 of the program where, under the mentorship of IIT Delhi professors and students, she helped create a water filter using algae to remove microplastics from contaminated water.
With additional support from her teammates and mentors, the project was further developed to filter harmful chemicals such as lead and mercury from water as well. Vartika’s contributions included research, product design, and development. She came up with the idea after reading an NIH research article that demonstrated how microplastics can attach to algae. Using this as the foundation of the project, she explored the use of algae for removing microplastics from water. She also sourced the specific algae and several components used in the project.
The team later presented the product at a science exhibition attended by professors, IIT alumni, and members of parliament. The project received appreciation and positive feedback from attendees. Former BJP MP Ms Meenakshi Lekhi was especially impressed by the idea and personally suggested that the team consider patenting the technology due to the importance of the issue it aims to address.
